Google's Word Definitions Just Got Way More Useful

Don't Text and Drive Because You Might Crash into a Manure Truck

So we might have found Biff Tannen. A guy in Wisconsin was texting and driving a Ford Mustang convertible when BAM... he crashed into a tractor pulling a trailer "full of liquid manure". Yikes, that might actually be worse than Biff's fate in Back to the Future.

What Guns Look Like Point Blank

What Guns Look Like Point Blank

This is what it looks like when a gun is pointing at you. It's a terrifying view that I hope nobody ever has to see. With photographs captured by Peter Andrew, Simon Duffy and Derek Blais, the ongoing photo series Point Blank shows what different types of guns—Glocks, Desert Eagles, Uzis, etc.—look like up close. It's an interesting angle because some look like harmless flashlights while others leave no doubt about its killing ability.

Watch a Hot Ball of Nickel Scorch Little Gummy Bears to Goop

Aug 23, 2:30AM

When you drop a burning ball of nickel onto the world's largest gummy bear, the synthetic gummy bear surprisingly wins. There's just too much gummy! But if you put that same burning ball of nickel onto normal sized gummy bears? No contest. Those little tasty fellers get destroyed and smoked and scorched and juiced and pulpified and oozed and gooped to hell. It's like some sort of alien fire.

Report: Amazon Is Testing Its Own Wireless Network

According to a Bloomberg report, Amazon has tested its own wireless network. As in a network that people would use to connect to the Internet. As in axing the middle man and essentially becoming a carrier or ISP on its own. As in potentially using a 'Amazon Wireless'-type service to get on the Internet from our Amazon Kindle Fire tablets to shop on Amazon.com or stream Amazon Instant Videos. Crazy.

Emojify for iOS: Turn Your Face Into a Piece of Emoji Art

Look at the text message conversation between any two people in the 12 to late 20s age range and there's a pretty decent chance you'll get a deluge of brightly colored cartoon icons that, just a few years ago, would have seemed entirely nonsensical. Now they can tell entire tales. Yes, Emojis have taken over, and rather than fight it, Emojify offers you just one more way to incorporate the language replacement into your life—gilding your very own photos in emoji gold.

We Can Now Print Ultrafast Graphene Chips for Flexible Electronics

Futurists are always talking about how flexible electronics will change our lives in amazing ways, but we've yet to see anything mind-blowing come to market. A team of scientists from the University of Texas in Austin, however, think they've found the key to changing that: ultrafast graphene transistors printed on flexible plastic.

Pistol Keys Were Once the Last Line of Defense For Prison Guards

Pistol Keys Were Once the Last Line of Defense For Prison Guards

Long before prison guards started carrying tasers, tear gas, and other non-lethal deterrents, they apparently relied on these cell door keys that also functioned as tiny one-shot pistols. They probably weren't lethal, but there's no doubt they packed enough of a punch to make an inmate very uncomfortable if they tried anything while a guard was unlocking their cell.

An Elegantly Low-Tech Cookbook Holder Powered By Gravity

The simplest way to keep a recipe open while prepping a meal is to only buy cookbooks with coiled bindings. The second simplest solution? Photos of History's Greatest Failed Explorers (And Their Legacies)

It's said that history is written by the victors. But at the same time, those victors often end up mythologizing the brave, failed losers that came before them. According to National Geographic Magazine, our fascination with failed explorers isn't just about scaring ourselves silly with stories of ice-encrusted tombs and cannibalism. It's a vital function of our will to make progress.

Ford's Factory Cameras Can Spot a Single Speck of Dust on a New Car

Aug 22, 8:20PM

Busy assembly lines can be dirty places, and nowhere is that more obvious than when a new vehicle rolls out of the paint shop. Specks and imperfections stand out like a sore thumb, and need to be cleaned up before a new car is delivered to a dealership. Previously, Ford relied on manual inspections, but now the automaker's using high-res cameras that capture and analyze over 3,000 images to spot every last speck of dirt.

16 Classic Films that Got Future Tech Right

You can yell, "Beam me up, Scotty!" all you want, the only thing that will happen is you'll elicit a bunch of bemused stares from passersby wondering if you've bonked your head recently. The sad fact is human teleportation devices don't yet exist in 2013, and even if they did, the tremendous lag would make it extraordinarily impractical. Such is the reality of science that it doesn't always mesh with our fantastic visions of fictional futures filled with flying cars and other implausible technologies. In other words, reality sucks compared to what we've grown up watching on television.

And even if you don't ever cut your own glass, this hack is still incredibly fun to watch.

Leave-In Compact SD Cards Boost Your MacBook's Storage Capacity

Leave-In Compact SD Cards Boost Your MacBook's Storage Capacity

The MacBook Air's incredibly thin form factor is made possible largely in part by its use of a solid-state drive—or SSD—instead of a more traditional and thicker hard drive with moving parts. The downside is that SSDs are still considerably smaller in capacity than traditional hard drives, but PNY now has an easy way to boost your MBA's storage by taking advantage of the laptop's integrated SD card slot.
