The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: SATUR 09

Apr 17, 4:00AM

So this is what living inside our most recognizable plant would look like—a gently bobbing yellow haze, with occasional downpours of ring rain. Quite peaceful really, ignoring the fact that its atmosphere is almost entirely hydrogen and helium. This short by Brazillian multimedia designer, Nagash, mixes macro video with snippets of "Saturnine" and "How to Measure a Planet" by The Gathering. More »

This is How the Jurassic Park Animatronic Triceratops Was Built

Apr 17, 3:30AM

As a young pup watching Jurassic Park, I was in terrified of the T-Rex, fearful of the Raptors, in awe of the Brachiosaurus and annoyed of that little spraying dinosaur. But probably above all, I felt for the Triceratops. It was hurt! It was dying! It was so incredibly detailed. Stan Winston School revealed how they built the Triceratops, how they painted it, how they shipped it and how the puppeteers controlled it in this video. Part two of the Triceratops video can be found here. [Stan Winston School] More »

Apr 17, 3:02AM

You can now watch the peculiar Funny or Die Steve Jobs movie iSteve. The 78 minute flick starring Justin Long as Steve Jobs was the third Steve Jobs biopic announced but the first to release. I think there's an award for that or something. You can watch the full length movie at Funny or Die here. [Funny or Die via 9to5Mac] More »

Oh yeah, and a lot of awesome flying. [Man of Steel] More »

Here's What's Inside Google Glass' Box

Apr 17, 1:00AM

Even though we've seen Google Glass be leaked, be announced, be presented, be demoed, be worn, be used and even be mocked, it's always represented some far off future technology that we never were sure if it would ever be real (in a I can't believe it's already here kind of way). But it's totally happening guys. And this is what it looks like. Brandon Allgood got his hands on the Google Glass box and revealed what's inside the future. More »

Toh Kay: With Any Sort Of Certainty

Apr 16, 11:00PM

This is, as animator Scott Benson puts it, "A story about not being OK, and trying to be." But who's to say what constitutes OK? Is it akin to childhood innocence—that which, once stripped, can never be revived? Or is it a more transient state of being, countering the gnawing pain of regret and self-doubt? More »

The Future of Rechargeable Batteries Could Smell Like Rotten Eggs

Apr 16, 9:40PM

Every 19 gallons of petroleum we refine leaves behind a half pound of sulfur byproduct—far more than we can even pretend to have use for. Why This Simple Government Website Was Named the Best Design of the Year

Apr 16, 9:34PM

When was the last time you tried to find a government form on the Internet? For me, it was a few months back, trying to track down an absentee ballot. And while I love American flag GIFs as much as the next patriot, I was amazed at the labyrinth of independent sites I had to visit before I found what I was looking for. Bringing the web presence of an entire government under one roof is a Sisyphean task, and the UK is one of the only countries that's managed to do it, with Gov.uk, a one-stop-web-shop that launched earlier this year. Apr 16, 8:40PM

Human space travel comes with a host of problems, not the least of which is our general inability to survive in a vacuum without, you know, dying. But a new technique that's done wonders for fruit fly larvae and could one day lead to the same for humans may have solved that problem. By bombarding larvae with electrons (as seen in the above video), Scientists discovered that they could get by in a vacuum totally unscathed. More »

This Robot Is Probably Better at Art Than You

Apr 16, 8:04PM

Robots: great for a lot of things, not so much for having autonomous feelings or thoughts, widely believed to be crucial for making art (an increasingly contested point). While we've seen plenty of toasters draw and sculpt based on human direction or input from a camera, BNJMN is one of the first to generate his own imagery. More »

Here's the final trailer for the new JJ Abrams film. Oh, and it looks like Benedict Cumberbatch has a gigantic Dark Enterprise. More »
