The Ultimate Whale Watching Vessel Isn't a Boat—It's a Satellite

I Can't Stop Looking at This Dead Mall's Abandoned Food Court

I Can't Stop Looking at This Dead Mall's Abandoned Food Court

Malls that were once active but have since been abandoned ("dead malls") are fascinating relics of greed, consumerism, and our increasingly antiquated analog way of life that required actual motion through space to get the material possessions we don't need, per se, but covet. They're also creepy and kind of sad, if you think about the unrealized dreams of the people to tried to sell you that shit you didn't need. Dead malls are sweeping the nation in that agonizingly slow manner that dead things sweep.

Feb 13, 5:39PM

OK, it didn't win the design competition, so this proposed radio tower will never be broadcasting over a city near you, but its harp-like cables and rings sure do make a cool structure in the sky. Designed by the London-based firm Architects of Invention for a site in Santiago de Chile, the tower would have included a circular walkway suspended above the city below. For other entries in the call for a landmark radio tower, stop by Plataforma Arquitectura. [Architects of Invention]

A Rear-Facing Bike Camera Reminds Drivers They're Being Recorded

An Occult History of the Television Set

An Occult History of the Television Set

The origin of the television set was heavily shrouded in both spiritualism and the occult, writes author Stefan Andriopoulos in his new book Ghostly Apparitions. In fact, as its very name implies, the television was first conceived as a technical device for seeing at a distance: like the telephone (speaking at a distance) and telescope (viewing at a distance), the television was intended as an almost magical box through which we could watch distant events unfold, a kind of technological crystal ball.

This Is Too Awesome: DARPA's Building Real Flying Transformers!

Between their remote locations and the ever present threat of ambush (or worse yet, IED), it's simply getting too dangerous to deliver the average 100,000 pounds of supplies that far-flung American forward combat bases require each week. Air drops by cargo plane or helicopter are one option, but DARPA researchers may already have a better solution: shape-shifting, cargo-carrying UAVs.

A Hovercraft That Isn't Afraid of Giant Waves

In order to float across land and water, the giant air-trapping skirt around the base of a hovercraft needs to keep a tight seal at all times. Were it to tackle giant waves, it would get tossed about just like a boat, but unlike a boat it would tend to sink—because that cushion of air would be gone. But an improved design means this hovercraft isn't afraid of rough seas.
