Feb 08, 7:00PM
This week, in the run up to the now-underway Winter Olympics, we've been talking a lot about Sochi: can it be built in time? Are those bathroom pictures real? How the Drought Is Devastating California's #1 Food Export: Almonds
Feb 08, 6:00PM
California grows a mind-boggling amount of the nation's produce: 99 percent of artichokes, 97 percent of kiwis, 97 percent of plums, 95 percent of celery, and on and on. That's why the record-breaking drought (yes, it's finally raining—no, it won't help much!) can affect your grocery bill, even if you live nowhere near California. But with almonds—the state's most lucrative agricultural export—the effect could reverberate for years.
This incredibly touching ad about whisky is better than most movies
Feb 08, 5:21PM
This moving commercial about Bell's whisky does more in two minutes than most movies do in two hours. Give it a try. I went in expecting nothing—I mean, it's a commercial!—and walked away gently holding my heart. It's definitely better than any commercial that aired during the Super Bowl and probably more heartwarming than some Oscar movies.
Lead a Better Life by Obsessively Tracking Every Aspect of It
Feb 08, 5:00PM
Blame the RPG's. After a generation of character building and class development in video games, quantifying our own personal stats has become as second nature as Second Life. And with these handy apps and gadgets at your disposal, you'll be power leveling through your days in no time.
Great, Hackers Can Use Snapchat to DoS Attack Your Phone
Feb 08, 4:00PM
When it comes to security, this hasn't been Snapchat's year. First hackers leaked a massive amount of private user data; then we discovered how dumb easy it is to circumvent Snapchat's anti-robot feature. Now, cyber security researchers have shown that Snapchat can be used to launch a denial-of-service attack that freezes your smartphone, according to the L.A. Times.
The 98-Year-Old MS Paint Prodigy in Microsoft's Super Bowl Commercial
Feb 08, 3:00PM
Remember Hal Lasko, the 98-year-old semi-blind artist who makes beautiful prints using Windows 95-era Microsoft Paint? He was in Microsoft's gorgeously sentimental commercial that aired during last Sunday's Super Bowl, as Mashable points out. Which is great, because we love the guy and his gorgeous work.
U.S. Bobsledder Busts Through a Door to Escape His Sochi Bathroom
Feb 08, 2:20PM
Team USA bobsledder Johnny Quinn got trapped in his Sochi bathroom while taking a shower when his door jammed and wouldn't open. Luckily, the former NFL football player turned slider had more than enough muscle to breach what looks like a rather flimsy door.
This Diesel-Powered Scooter Packs More Utility Than a Swiss Army Knife
Feb 08, 2:00PM
If I started telling you about a new all-wheel-drive, turbodiesel-powered off-roader, you'd probably think I was talking about a 4x4 truck or SUV, right? Wrong. Check out the RNT, a concept from Indian motorcycle company Hero that could be the only back-country survival tool a motorcycle adventurer would ever need.
This image showing every second of Jurassic Park looks like dino skin
Feb 08, 5:30AM
To be fair, if you put together every second of any movie in one image, that image would almost always look like the skin and scales of dinosaurs but I swear my mind is making me believe it even more for Jurassic Park. It also kind of looks like a Magic Eye picture and I half expect T-Rex to pop out and chase after me.
The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: Presenting
Feb 08, 5:00AM
Oh wow, this is wonderfully psychedelic. Oslo based illustration agency, byHands, shows off its wide variety of illustrative styles in this excellently eclectic, experimental animation. I only wish there were more of it.
Watch an enchanted forest come to life in a dancing light show
Feb 08, 4:30AM
Ooh, lights. Pretty. It's like stepping into an enchanted forest from the future. Romain Tardy and Squeaky Lobster created this installation called The Ark during Proyecta Oaxaca at the Ethnobotanical Garden in Oaxaca, Mexico. It's built around the cacti that line the heart of the garden and the installation projects lights onto it and gives voice to the plants.
New awesome videos show how mesmerizing that morphing table is
Feb 08, 3:23AM
It still looks like magic. To be honest, I haven't ruled out magic as a reasonable explanation for this yet yet. The MIT morphing table that lets you create a virtual version of you has some new tricks up its sleeves and they're just as impressively mesmerizing as the first time we saw it. Watch it control the red ball and inception a false reality on it.
You can bake cookies from the cookie dough of cookie dough ice cream
Feb 08, 2:13AM
Well, well, well. Isn't this good to know? Turns out, you can strain all the ice cream out of cookie dough ice cream and use its dough to bake cookies. Surprise! It's actually cookie dough! It's not just factory made cookie flavoring made to make you crave ice cream more (even if it still is all that).
Crazy guys sky walked across a rope connected by two hot air balloons
Feb 08, 1:36AM
Sometimes simple thrills and basic fears just aren't enough for crazies so they combine adventures and challenges into a sort of super extreme Frankensteinian dance with danger. That's how we end up with guys trying to walk a tightrope across the sky that are connected by two hot air balloons. If you fall, you plummet to the ground (like skydiving).
Most Beautiful Items: January 31 - Feb 7, 2014
Feb 08, 1:00AM

From fungus towers to slinky-like sculptures, here are the most beautiful things we showed you this week.
Why A Trompe L'Oeil Tech Bus Is Upsetting San Franciscans
Feb 08, 12:40AM
Any mention of tech buses in San Francisco should come with a trigger warning, because pretty much every discussion surrounding the massive, much-maligned vehicles comes fully equipped with deep contention. Now, the winners of an unofficial competition to rebrand the behemoths—which are often partially bright white and completely unmarked—has sparked a new debate over art, ownership, and community. Buckle up.

Real life Spider-Man climbs 1500-foot wall with no equipment whatsoever
Feb 08, 12:20AM
I can't imagine climbing 10 feet and this guy did 1500 with no equipment. He's basically Spider-Man. Rock climber Alex Honnold used no equipment to scale the 1500-foot limestone wall of El Sendero Luminoso in El Potrero Chico, Mexico. It's the first ever free solo ascent of the wall.
The Dangers of Dating a Butterphone
Feb 08, 12:00AM
We've all been there before. You're out at a bar with friends when—suddenly—you find yourself talking the man and/or woman of your dreams. You exchange numbers, and the next morning, after carefully crafting your first sober communication, you await his or her response with bated breath. Your phone vibrates. You look down, eyes opened wide. And then—there it is, burning your eyes like a slap in the face. Green chat bubbles.
3D Scanning Saved These Ancient Footprints Just Before They Washed Away
Feb 07, 11:40PM
In May 2013, a storm uncovered these ancient footprints on an English beach. At over 800,000 years old, they're the oldest human ancestor footprints ever found outside of Africa. The storm that revealed them soon washed them away too, but scientists have been studying the footprints for months after the fact, thanks to 3D imaging.
