Nov 09, 7:08AM
You're seeing America's new ground-to-air missile defense system in action, destroying an enemy QF-4 Phantom fighter jet. In fact, it simultaneously destroyed two airborne enemies during a stress test last Wednesday. Its name is MEADS and it will replace the famous Patriot missile interceptors.
The Weirdest Thing on the Internet: G.I. Jane (NSFW)
Nov 09, 5:00AM
Those poor, poor trouser snakes. No, not the Boner whales too! Come on lady, those are an endangered species! And who told you you could ride the Man-atees like that? No silver surfing the Man-atees!
You can watch your favorite movies in one minute with these GIFs
Nov 09, 4:31AM
With movies you've already seen, sitting through the whole thing again is a little bit much. Since you already know what's going to happen, you only need to see a few key sequences to get the same amount of enjoyment. A quick top off as opposed to a full refill, you know? Reddit understood that and developed a whole new genre of animated gifs: the full movie GIF, an entire movie distilled into a GIF shot.

This amazing fruit fly evolved to have pictures of ants on its wings
Nov 09, 2:05AM
This is unbelievable, but the fruit fly G tridens has somehow evolved to have what looks like pictures of ants on its wings. Seriously, its transparent wings have an ant design on them complete with "six legs, two antennae, a head, thorax and tapered abdomen." It's nature's evolutionary art painted on a fly's wings.

Every superhero movie is the same as every other superhero movie
Nov 09, 12:42AM
It's true. Even if you're dealing with the brilliant Dark Knight or fantastic Iron Man or the good times of Thor, all superhero movies pretty much boil down to the same thing: an established hero fighting a lunatic bad guy to prevent the destruction of some version of New York City with epic fight scenes and long death scenes galore. Slacktory nails this perfectly in their hilarious video How to make a superhero in 10 easy steps.

Smartphones Are Made for Giant Man-Hands
Nov 09, 12:00AM
About a month and a half ago, after years of relentless Blackberry mockery from my plugged in coworkers, I did something pretty out of my typically Luddite character: I bought a smartphone. And so far, I like it just fine. I can listen to Spotify on my phone now, which is nice. And the picture quality is much better than my old phone's. The biggest problem? My phone was clearly designed for someone with hands much, much bigger than mine. And I'm not the only woman with this problem.
Our Favorite Android, iOS and Windows Phone Apps of the Week
Nov 08, 11:40PM
There's a cruel chill in the air. The clocks have changed. It seems like it's already dark out by lunch time. But never fear — the warming glow of your smartphone is always there. Build a blanket fort and hunker down til springtime with our favorite new apps. No, I will not end this with a "winter is coming" joke.
People tip toeing on top of buildings over cities will always be scary
Nov 08, 11:34PM
There's not to much say. I'm a wimp when it comes to these photos. Tom Ryaboi, an awesome photographer who has mastered the art of taking knee-shaking shots of people looking down on cities from impossible heights, is not. And I'm thankful for Ryaboi's thrill seeking awesomeness because just looking at these pictures freak me out. The landscape, the lights, the buildings and the risk all come together in a dizzying sensation of spectacular.
Who Thinks Letting Cops Use Facial Recognition Devices Is a Bad Idea?
Nov 08, 11:21PM
In the past couple years, companies like Google and Facebook have struggled to find the right balance between useful and creepy with the development of facial recognition technology. Some law enforcement agencies, however, are not holding back their enthusiasm—and nobody's going for it quite like the cops in San Diego.
Watch These Crazy Animations of How Three Cities Commute
Nov 08, 10:58PM
New York City mostly rides transit, Los Angeles loves its cars, and San Francisco has a dedicated population of bike commuters. UC Berkeley planning Ph.D. student Fletcher Foti recently built a brilliant data visualization that brings these facts to life by animating commuting patterns for the Bay Area, L.A., and NYC.
3D-Printed Mini Human Liver Survives 40 Days, Works Like the Real Thing
Nov 08, 10:32PM
Organovo's 3D-printed mini-liver just shattered its own record, carrying out the same cellular functions as a natural human liver for 40 days in the lab. That may not seem like a lot — human liver cells are replaced about every 300 to 500 days — but the company's previous millimeter-sized liver slivers only managed five days. The trick: Organovo uses the same mix of hepatocytes (the cells that carry out liver functions) and endothelial cells (which form the liver's architectural support) found in nature, leading cells to develop more naturally than other experiments that used only the functional cells. It's a small but significant step for the more than 120,000 people on organ transplant waiting lists worldwide.
These Fantastic Funnels Filter Faucets as Fast as They Flow
Nov 08, 10:20PM
Whirlpool is tackling the issue of wasteful plastic water bottles with a new product that finally lives up to the company's namesake. The EveryDrop looks a giant plastic drip, but when turned upside down it works as a funnel that filters water from a faucet as fast as it flows—so there's no waiting hours for thousands of methodical drips to fall.
The 1930s Mechanical Man Who Tried To Start A Robot Uprising
Nov 08, 10:05PM
Back in 1932, the world was awash in newspaper stories about a robot that had done the unthinkable: a mechanical man had shot its inventor.

Whiskey producers are going to great lengths to keep up with demands. So we thought it was high time we took a look at how this delicate and beautiful creature is made. (Play the sexy music.)

Using the tiny display from an old Sony viewfinder and an all-in-one Atari joystick, he created what is easily the world's smallest game console, putting even a Tamagotchi to shame.

Hello, friends. Friday is upon us once again, and to celebrate, the whole Giz staff will be hanging around this thread until the end of the day to talk about whatever you want. And there's been a lot to talk about this week—our beloved trans-fats have been damned, New York City's giant mass grave was unearthed, and a crack-smoking Canuck mayor had a few unfortunate camera run-ins.
The Architectural Trickery Used to Disguise D.C. Monument Renovations
Nov 08, 9:19PM
Washington D.C. is getting old. To other countries, our nation's capital might seem like a spring chicken, but it's actually aging rapidly—a fact proven by the scaffolding that's draped around some of its most important monuments this year.
