A Tribe Called Red: Look At This

A friend told me about A Tribe Called Red a few days ago and I've been listening ever since. They're a Canadian group that blends hip-hop and dubstep with featured Native powwow chant. The group consists of three members: DJ Shub, DJ NDN and Bear Witness. They have two albums, Nation II Nation (which is on Spotify) and a self-titled debut album. There's also an EP called Trapline. It's really refreshing to hear a take on Native American chant and music that isn't too self-conscious about moving into modern genres. Just turn it on and let it play. "Look At This" is on the group's first album, which you can download for free here.

This Celestial Caterpillar May Not Become A Stellar Butterfly

IRAS 20324+4057 is a mouthful, and it's about 4,500 light years away, but it's also a star on the move. It's expanding to form a new star, but it's unclear how massive that new star will be. "Energetic" wind and light is displacing a lot of the gas and dust that would normally go into the "protostar." Depending on how the play between light and gravity resolves (over the next 100,000 years), the star could expand out and eventually develop into a planetary nebula, or could pull matter in and become a massive star. The protostellar nebula is about one light year across. It was imaged by Hubble in 2006, but the photo above was only released recently. Though it's unclear what will happen, NASA wants to start making predictions using "clever observations and deductions." We can all play a little stellar guessing game. [Astronomy Picture of the Day]

It's disorienting to walk into a room where nothing is as it seems. Your doctor might be grimacing even though your test results are fine. Or everything might look normal in your house until you realize that there's a cable outage and your internet is down. While the United States discusses about the political convenience of bombing President Assad's military, some of the two million Syrian refugees are begging Obama to attack at once. According to Spanish newspaper El País, that's the opinion of many of the 144,000 Syrian exiles surviving at Zaatari, a refugee city made of tents in Jordan. It looks like a scene from an post-apocalyptical movie.

When it turned out that the Firefox JavaScript Tor vulnerability shenanigans were originating from the NSA not the FBI, it was pretty clear that the agency was looking to undermine and access Tor's anonymous internet. It's like a moth to a flame. But now security expert Robert Graham has outlined his reasons for believing that the NSA doesn't even need tricks and paltry exploits to access Tor, because they have the keys to the kingdom. Or can.

Will There Be One Ring To Rule Them All Around The 5S Home Button?

There have been rumors for about a month that the iPhone 5S home button is going to be ringed in silver. Clayton Morris even told This Week In Tech that he was "unequivocally" sure about the change, and that the home button would otherwise have the same concave design. Other leaked photos have supported the rumor, though as usual their authenticity is somewhat questionable.

I guess we're not even surprised at this point. Der Spiegel is reporting that internal NSA documents prove the agency's widespread smartphone data access. And it's pretty exhaustive. Spiegel found explicit mention of information access from iPhones, BlackBerry handsets, and devices running Android.

It Takes Longer To Compose Texts That Have A Lie In Them

Most people lie. Whether it's once and a while or daily, everyone has to do their thing and sometimes lying seems like the best way to make it all work. But liars have tells, which can be just as important in life as in poker. And a new study suggests that people take longer to respond to texts when they're cooking up a lie. Just one more thing to factor into the social calculus.
