Jul 16, 7:48AM
We've all been there: arrive in a grubby public rest room, realise there's nowhere to hang anything, and be faced by the grim experience of dropping your possessions to the grimy floor. This folding hook could save you from that fate.
Huh, HBO Gave Google a Copyright Takedown Request for... VLC
Jul 16, 4:22AM
VLC is not a TV show. Nor is it a movie. Nor is it a music album. Nor is it anything but open source software that the entire Internet knows as the greatest video player in all the lands. HBO, however, apparently doesn't know that. The It's Not TV TV company recently sent Google a takedown request for VLC citing copyright infringement.
The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: How Roy Scheider Got His Tan
Jul 16, 4:00AM
Roy Scheider is the tannest guy you know. More bronzed than his baby shoes, Scheider's immaculately impeccable skin tone is rivaled only by his acting prowess. I mean, how else could Captain Nathan Bridger glow that deeply while 20,000 leagues under the sea? [Indistinguishable from Magic]

Does that make me stupid? Yes. Does that make me useless? Yes. Does that make me scratch my head as the wind passes through my hair? Absolutely yes.

Jul 16, 1:35AM
Droid Life got their hands on internal Verizon slides that reveal that Verizon has plans to let its customers upgrade their phones more often. Yeah, kind of like T-Mobile's Jump plan. The 'VZ Edge' plan will supposedly let Big Red customers upgrade to a new phone once they have paid off 50% of their phone. Upgrade before your upgrade. Pay to keep paying.
Holy Wow This Guy Made Insane Wolverine Claws That Destroy Everything
Jul 16, 1:00AM
On the list of comic book hero abilities I dream about magically waking up with one day, Wolverine's claws were probably squeezed right between Superman's flying and Bruce Wayne's women. One of those have practically become reality. These steel Wolverine claws are so fantastically perfect that you could fight Wolverine himself with it. And maybe even win.

Watch NFL Players Awkwardly Use Google Glass
Jul 15, 11:30PM
The "fun" tech question to ask famous people and/or grandmas in 2013 is what they think of Google Glass. Most usually this requires slapping Google Glass onto their face, making awkward conversation on how to control it, asking them to do what they do best and then talking about if they think it's the future or not. They almost always say yes.

Why Can't Luggage For Adults Be As Wonderful As This Robo-Bag?
Jul 15, 10:20PM
There's an unwritten rule that luggage for adults has to have a fairly mundane and boring design. But when you're waiting at the luggage carousel and realize that everyone else had the same idea to buy a red suitcase to stand out, you realize there has to be a better way. And there is, it's just too bad the $40 Luggo here is only big enough to store a child's wardrobe.
Clipper for iOS: Splice Together Mini-Movies in a Matter of Seconds
Jul 15, 10:00PM
One of the great things about Vine and now Instagram, too, is the ability to stop filming and pick up right where you left off. It has the effect of producing more dynamic, interesting clips than you would otherwise. But that's the problem—your're stuck to clips. With Clipper, though, you can get that very same result without the time constraints.

The Depression-Era TV of Tomorrow Had Home Shopping--And a Like Button
Jul 15, 8:53PM
TV advertisers imagine that one day soon you might see a product on screen — say Don Draper's whiskey glass or Daenerys Targaryen's dress—and pause the program, click on the product and then instantly purchase it. Relatively primitive versions of this technology already exist, but the idea is far from new. Long before most people had even seen a TV set, this type of instant-purchase tech for television was already being imagined in the "radio" of the future. A radio set that also included TV with a swivel head, instant newspapers printed right at home, and a telephone that could reach the family car.
It's a Cinch for Hackers to Break Into Your Verizon Network
Jul 15, 8:00PM
Although they probably didn't maintain any pretense of security, Verizon customers will be bummed to know that a duo of security experts have discovered how to hack into the carrier's network extending base stations and turn them into little spy centers.
Let's Hope These Self-Assembling Flat-Pack Structures Inspire Ikea
Jul 15, 8:00PM
A bunch of geniuses from Harvard, MIT, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute are about to make your life a heck of a lot easier the next time you move into a new place. They've all been working together to develop flat-pack structures using shape memory polymers that can self-assemble into 3D structures when a charge is applied. Which means that one day assembling that Expedit bookshelf you got from Ikea could be as easy as plugging it in.
How to Design Beautiful iOS App Icons, According to Apple
Jul 15, 7:40PM
It's no coincidence that the best and most popular apps frequently have striking and memorable icons. It might seem like just a colorful tile, but a good icon is critical piece of an app's design that has a huge effect on how people think about and interact with what's inside. Here's a rare look at how Apple thinks icons should look, straight from one of the company's design gurus.
The iPhone Didn't Kill Cameras, It Made Us Want Better Ones
Jul 15, 7:34PM
The Wall Street Journal pointed out today that while sales of point-and-shoot cameras have declined steadily over the past few years, DSLRs and other interchangeable-lens cameras have been doing great. That's right. People don't want to just take more photos than ever, they want to take better photos, with big-kid cameras. And that's not in spite of the smartphone revolution. It's because of it.
Researchers Use Circuit Printer to Make Functional Heart Muscle
Jul 15, 7:20PM
Growing replacement organs in a lab and transplanting them is science-fiction dream-turned-very-possible-reality, but so far it's been limited to simple tissues. Today, MIT researchers published findings on their successful attempts to build functional heart tissue, using a modified machine originally meant to build integrated circuits.
Explore a Turn-of-the-Century Parisian Landmark on the Back of a Drone
Jul 15, 7:01PM
Drone photography: If you're not against it because of the Constitution, you're against it because of how over-hyped it is. But in the hands of enterprising architecture fans, unmanned airborne cameras are also letting us explore some of the most important structures ever built from entirely new angles. Today, it's Paris' 1897 glass-and-steel icon, the Grand Palais.

These Scissors' Grooved Handle Makes Them Safer To Use as a Knife
Jul 15, 6:40PM
At one point or another, who of us hasn't risked losing a finger by opening a pair of scissors and using them as a quick, impromptu knife? It turns out they're a pretty good way to open taped boxes without horribly slicing what's inside, so Quirky took the idea and created a pair of scissors called the Sheath that's actually safe to use as an improvised knife.
Watch This German UAV Crash into a Plane on an Afghan Runway
Jul 15, 6:17PM
This is why we can't have nice things. Recently declassified video footage from Northern Afghanistan shows that piloting a drone isn't nearly as easy as it seems, even when it's still on the ground.
