Apr 03, 3:30AM

Wow, Watch This ATM Machine Get Blown to Bits and Pieces By Genius Thieves

Apr 03, 3:00AM

If you're looking to steal money from an ATM, what do you do? Try to wheel it to your house and smash it until it opens? Continually rob people who try to take money out of the machine? Hmm, what about just blowing the freaking ATM up to smithereens with explosives. That's what these thieves did. The explosion was insane. More »

If Every Internet Commenter's Wish Really Came True

Apr 03, 2:00AM

I love Internet commenters because they make me laugh. The good ones are so funny! And even when they're awful and mean spirited and filled with hate, there's a certain humor that comes from that sort of silliness. But what if commenters actually get what they wish for in their comments? This comic hilariously explains that it wouldn't change a damn thing. [Funny or Die via Neatorama] More »

New York City Looks Amazing from the World Trade Center's New Observation Deck

Apr 03, 1:00AM

After more than a decade of planning, legal wrangling, and construction, One World Trade Center is tantalizingly close to completion. Earlier today, the Port Authority offered a glimpse of the WTC's 100th floor observation deck as well as the stunning views visitors will enjoy when the tallest building in the Western hemisphere opens to the public in 2015. Toy Place is a lovely short documentary by Ben Churchill that tours the amazing Vermont Toy Museum that houses a collection of almost 100,000 toys. I want to go there now. We should all go there now. More »

The Control Room of a German Submarine from 1918

Apr 02, 11:00PM

Taken in November of 1918 these two photos show the inside of the UB-110 German Submarine. The valves were used to control the submarine and the reverse image is of four torpedo tubes used against a merchant ship in July 1918. Soon after the attack the submarine sunk and later was salvaged, but scrapped. Follow the via to see much larger images. [Tyne and Wear Archives via Twisted Sifter] More »

TripWhat: All the Travel Data You Need Sucked Into One Little App

Apr 02, 10:00PM

Traveling, even when its meant to relax, can be an immensely overwhelming experience. And sifting through the endless sea of apps supposedly meant to "ease" the process doesn't exactly help the situation. TripWhat, however, takes those apps you already know and love and combines them to make one, comprehensive conglomerate of an app that takes at least some of the pain out of trip planning. Mark Zuckerberg, Pummeled and Posterized

Apr 02, 9:52PM

OK, nobody actually beat up Mark Zuckerberg but someone did plaster a series of posters that make it seem as though the Facebook founder had been beaten up. When in actuality it's the latest work of famed NYC graffiti artist KATSU. You might have seen his signature skulls around the city or his app. More »

Safer Bladeless Windmills Could One Day Dot the Countryside

Apr 02, 9:40PM

Opponents of windmills cite the dangers the spinning blades post to birds, the risk of damage due to storms, and the maintenance required to keep all those moving parts running smoothly. But what if a windmill lacked blades and didn't move at all? That's the idea behind the Delft University of Technology's EWICON which looks more like a modern piece of art more than an eco-friendly source of energy. More »

We'd All Be Fat If Every McDonald's Looked This Inviting

Apr 02, 9:20PM

When you're on a long road trip, you generally eat what you can, where you can. That can mean many meals at a combination Exxon/KFC/Taco Bell/Tiger Mart. But have you ever seen a rest stop as amazing as this hybrid gas station/McDonald's in Batumi, Georgia? (The country, not the state.) More »

This Is (Probably) the New Facebook Phone

Apr 02, 8:37PM

Facebook has a big event planned Thursday to show off a new homescreen, reportedly, along with a "midtier" (read: cheap) phone. According to well-known tipster evleaks, this is it. It looks pretty boring, sure, but boring is a billion million times better than Facebook's last gawdawful swing at hardware. Baby steps! [evleaks] More »

Could Adjusting Your Cameraphone Settings Based On the Weather Really Improve Your Shots?

Apr 02, 8:04PM

Like it or not, compared to a DSLR, or even a point & shoot, your smartphone's camera sucks. They've gotten considerably better over the years, and will continue to improve, but their tiny sensors and limited optics means image quality and their ability to accurately process a scene still have a long way to go. Jenga's Now Infinitely More Stressful With a Ticking Time Bomb

Apr 02, 7:40PM

Jenga is one of those rare games that turns an incredibly simple concept into an endlessly playable challenge. Like Tetris, checkers, or tic-tac-toe, it doesn't need improving, but that didn't stop Hasbro. Borrowing an idea from the classic Perfection game, Jenga Boom includes a ticking time bomb base that automatically topples the tower when the timer runs out. More »

The Indestructible Touchscreen Kiosks That Will Take Over New York's Subways

Apr 02, 7:20PM

Over the last few weeks you might've heard about the ultra-futuristic information kiosks recently developed for the New York City subway system. It's sci-fi stuff, thoroughly modernizing the arteries of an often creaky metropolis. And we headed down to New York's financial district to check out a working prototype for ourselves. More »

This Gorillapod Is Your Selfie-Improving Deal of the Day

Apr 02, 7:00PM

Earlier today I found out it's totally gauche to post more than two selfies in a month. But here's one loophole—if you're taking the photos with a self-timer, they're not selfies anymore, they're self-portraits. Bordering on art. Totally acceptable. Post as many as you want. But to take a really stellar self-portrait, you need a sturdy tripod. More »

Multiple-Display Software Follows Your Gaze to Keep You Focused

Apr 02, 6:40PM

These days, multiple monitors are becoming the norm instead of the exception. And with most interfaces designed to capture your attention—everywhere and at all costs—the constant barrage of blinking windows, beeping notifications, and bouncing icons can be distracting if not entirely overwhelming. New Windows software, Diff Displays, wants to fix this by making sure you're focused on the information you need and nothing else. More »

How Parallel Universes Actually Work, Scientifically

Apr 02, 5:54PM

Parallel universes are basically the most popular trope in science fiction, because Batman and Spider-Man in alternate universe costumes are awesome, and also human existence is inherently full of awful, soul-crushing regret. But how does the science actually work? More »

Would You Accept A One-Way Trip to a Colony on Mars?

Apr 02, 5:40PM

Now that nuclear-thermal rockets are becoming a reality, we may very well be shipping off the first human pioneers to Mars (both safely and efficiently) in the not-too-distant future. This, of course, leaves the question of exactly who will become the first generation of Martian-Earthlings. More »

Ride Along With a Wing Walker and Be Extra Thankful For Your Safe, Safe Job

Apr 02, 5:17PM

After watching this terrifying footage of a wing walker precariously climbing out of their seat and onto the top of a plane, you'll never complain about your crappy job ever again. You'll also probably wonder how this particular hobby ever came about. Even the Wright Brothers—the first people to fly—believed in seats and restraints. It's a terrifying and ridiculous stunt, even if it makes for some awesome GoPro footage. More »

North Korea's Nuclear Reactor: Everything You Need to Know

Apr 02, 4:58PM

After its third nuclear test in February drew a harsh rebuke from the international community and further tightened economic sanctions against the Hermit Kingdom, North Korea has once again doubled down on its nuclear rhetoric. The country announced today that it will soon restart the Yongbyon reactor, Pyongyang's primary plutonium processing plant. More »

Concussions Can Be Diagnosed With a Simple App Now

Apr 02, 4:40PM

It's estimated that every year in the US there are 1.6 million to 3.8 million sports-related traumatic brain injuries. And if not diagnosed in a timely and accurate manner, they can lead to further complications including depression and even suicide. So researchers at the University of Notre Dame have developed a voice recognition iPad app that listens for signs of a brain injury in someone's speech, providing an almost instant diagnosis.
