Haha, People Who Read Your Message But Don't Reply Are the Worst
May 09, 5:00AM
Before I go off calling everyone who has read receipts on but still doesn't reply in a timely matter rude assholes, please note that I am one of them. But still! I hear it's verrry annoying for other people to see some messages be read (and for Facebook, it pretty much has to be that way) and quickly replied to while others just toil in obscurity. What is up with that?
The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: Take Me to The Fog
May 09, 4:00AM
No matter how advanced the invading alien culture, rest assured that humanity will find a way to fight back—be it the bacteria from War of the Worlds, Jeff Goldblum from Independence Day, or a pipe rip of the sticky icky from Stephen J Mitchell's awesome stop motion short, Take Me to the Fog.
Report: Microsoft Wants to Buy Nook for $1 Billion
May 09, 3:19AM
TechCrunch is reporting that Microsoft, which has already made an interesting $300 million investment in Nook, wants to double down and buy the whole darn thing. Specifically, Microsoft wants to pay $1 billion to acquire the digital assets of Nook Media LLC—that would be the separate Nook company that spun off from Barnes & Noble last year. Microsoft wants its own Kindle (or iBooks) store.
Kids Trying Food for the First Time Is the Most Adorable Thing
May 09, 1:45AM
Do you remember the first time you ate an olive? It probably turned you off from anything that had an olive in it until you started drinking martinis. Such is the way certain foods are when you're young. Anything vegetable related? Bleh. Anything too strong or spicy tasting? Ahh! But as you grow up, you realize everything is delicious.
What A First Person View of a Lightsaber Duel Looks Like
May 09, 12:39AM
If lightsabers ever become real, and let's be honest some genius will dedicate his entire life into making that happen, I hope the entire world will be well practiced in how to handle them. Sure the ballet of Star Wars characters fighting in light sabers looks great (or ridiculous), but when you get an up close view on the sword fight? The whole world will be missing at least one of their hands.
Goddammit, We Still Can't Cure Alzheimer's Disease
May 08, 11:24PM
Last summer, a promising trial of a new antibody treatment was shown to totally stop cognitive decline in four Alzheimer's patients over the course of three years, giving researchers hope that the disease could be slowed or even cured. This year, it was expanded into a double blind placebo test and administered to nearly 100 times more Alzheimer's patients. It proved ineffective. Goddammit.
Pulling Your Parachute While You're Still on the Plane Is Not Fun
May 08, 11:07PM
Wait for it. Wait for ittttt. Waaaitttt forrr itttt. Waai... and then boom, there it is. This poor guy accidentally deployed his parachute too early. So early that he was still on the plane. As you can imagine, he immediately got sucked out of the plane. It's like a scene from the movies, the parachute drags him out and you can see his body whip back. Scary. [Suigenesis via Digg Videos]

DIY Cleaning Products? All You Need Is This Bottle
May 08, 9:00PM
There's so much brain-melting, fish-mutating crap in the products we use every day to clean things. Natural products tend to be pretty expensive, but not if you make them yourself with this clever cleaning bottle.
FBI Documents Suggest That Feds Read Your Emails Without a Warrant
May 08, 8:34PM
New documents from the FBI and U.S. Attorneys' offices paint a troubling picture of the government's email surveillance practices. Not only does the FBI claim it can read emails and other electronic communications without a warrant—even after a federal appeals court ruled that doing so violates the Fourth Amendment—but the documents strongly suggest that different U.S. Attorneys' offices around the country are applying conflicting standards to access communications content (you can see the documents here).

This Pioneer Turntable Really Grooves
May 08, 7:40PM
Featuring direct drive and an auto-return tone arm, the Pioneer PL-4 remains a popular turntable sought after by collectors and audiophiles alike more than three decades after its introduction. And after watching this slick piece of retro-futurism from Light & Hevvy, mixing vintage-style shots with Mario Moretti's "In Love With Nebula," is there any wonder why? [LXH - Vinyl Engine]
Dear Apple, Let's Talk About Photos
May 08, 7:30PM
We've been managing our photos together for almost a decade now. Things were nice and simple at the start and we both knew what to expect from each other—I pulled my photos off my camera on the computer, imported them into iPhoto and arranged them. Life was good.

A Free After Contract Lumia 920 Is Your Deal of the Day
May 08, 7:00PM
The Lumia 920 is the best Windows 8 phone you can currently buy. Sure, it might have a little too much junk in the trunk, but that girth houses the king of smartphone cameras. It's built like a tank. And although Windows Phone 8 is still a little behind in app availability, it's catching up every day. If you've wanted to give the Microsoft mobile operating system a try, there's never been a better time—AT&T is running a one-day sale where a Lumia 920 is free with a new contract. Of course, there's still the cost of the contract, but that's easy to overlook when you're live-tiling it up. Those tiles—they're so alive. [AT&T]
How Jack Conte Made a Completely Batshit DIY Music Video From Scratch
May 08, 6:51PM
Jack Conte's "Pedals" music video is nuts. Holy crap, electronic music robot madness. But this is one of those situations where you have trouble deciding what's crazier: the music video or the behind-the-scenes describing how the music video was made. Be the judge for yourself.
Why Is YouTube Censoring David Bowie's SFW New Music Video?
May 08, 6:24PM
Here we go again. After Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" video was pulled from YouTube last month, David Bowie's latest video from his new album "The Next Day" has been pulled from YouTube for violating the site's Terms of Service as pointed out by Billboard. But it's unclear why for a number of reasons.
