Google Knows the Wi-Fi Passwords of All Android Users
Sep 16, 11:30AM
A new privacy fuss is kicking off around Google's Android mobile OS, with security boffins claiming that the software's backup tools mean that a copy of everyone's Wi-Fi password history is now saved to Google's servers. Which may mean it could be legally compelled to hand them out, should a government come calling.

Sep 16, 8:21AM
Google Glass seems to no longer require a tethering plan to share data with a smartphone—which, uh, saves a tiny proportion of the cost of the device as it stands. Great!

Chiddy Bang (ft. Mac Miller): Heatwave
Sep 16, 1:00AM
Guys I think summer might be over. I know it was Labor Day already and everything, but now I see that I've been in denial. I mean fall is great, but I just didn't really think it was time. It's almost as devastating as when Chiddy Bang broke up in May. I'm flexible, though. I can roll with it. This can be our symbolic marker of summer's end. Released in 2011, Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege and Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin produced and recorded "Heatwave" with Mac Miller. It's upbeat but still chill, and maybe we can carry that vibe into fall. Okay, I feel good about this.
Who Owns The Moon?
Sep 16, 12:00AM
The moon is not as far away as some things, but it's definitely farther away than your nearest McDonalds or the bottom of the ocean or, you know, anything on Earth at all. Basically it's not easily accessible. So it would be pretty presumptuous for a person or group to say that they owned a certain part of it. Or all of it. But it's kind of complicated to figure out what would happen if anyone tried.
The Motion Of A Train Drawn By A Train
Sep 15, 11:25PM
Station to Station is a project that brings "cultural interventions" to nine cities around the U.S.. Basically it's a tricked out train with lots of art installations and other pieces on board. And when the train stops in each city, there are additional local events planned. If you want to see what goes on on the train between stops, though, you have to look at designer Olafur Eliasson's work, "Connecting Cross Country With A Line."
There's An App For Legally Binding Contracts
Sep 15, 10:39PM
Signing something on a smartphone may not feel very legit, but be careful where you squiggle because mobile contracts are for real. And if you're trying to keep legal fees down, a contracts app like Shake may actually help. Shake's CEO claims that $1 million worth of contracts have already been signed on the app, which was originally released last year. A significantly updated 2.0 version is out this week.
Japan's Rocket Launch Was Totally On The Cheap
Sep 15, 9:22PM
Yesterday the Japanese space agency Jaxa successfully launched the Epsilon rocket, which is carrying a telescope, Sprint-A, for planetary observation. Jaxa was able to complete the launch for about $37 million, half the cost of previous Jaxa rockets and cheap compared to an average $450 million NASA launch.
Wow, This Is a Hilariously Dumb Thing To Do With a Toaster
Sep 15, 7:57PM
When you stick anything metal into a toaster that's plugged in, something like this will happen. This is a pretty extreme/dumbass case, but something bad will happen. Every time. No no. No need to test it. This is what's up. What if it's a fork? Risk of electrocution. Spatula? Explosion. Tongs? Kaboom. If you're still not getting it, be sure someone is shooting a Vine while you run tests of your own. But really, be safe kids. [Boing Boing via Digg]
Our Favorite TV Shows Never Really Leave Us
Sep 15, 7:33PM
Everyone has favorite shows. Look at Breaking Bad. Fans are everywhere right now. And like Breaking Bad all shows must meet a noble or ignominious end. But that doesn't mean we stop loving them. Or hating them so much that we are oddly fascinated and can't stop watching. That's why Offerpop took a look at which shows have the most likes on Facebook and how these fans break down.
Holy Crap: Watch Volvo Use A Hamster To Steer An Enormous Truck
Sep 15, 6:37PM
Volvo's new trucks are so easy to drive, a hamster could do it! No, really. Volvo Trucks built a makeshift hamster wheel onto the tiller of one of its rigs, and using nothing but the orange-y allure of a carrot, a hamster steered a 15-ton truck all the way up a quarry, with sheer cliffs off each side. Holy crap.
What Type Of Watch Do You Wear?
Sep 15, 6:06PM
There's been a lot of talk about smart watches lately, but most of us aren't there yet. I wear the same analog watch every day. It tells time and looks kinda nice. I feel naked if I leave the house without it. Some people are all about digital options, either because they find them easier to read or because they want easily accessible stopwatch/calculator/whatever functions. But watches aren't for everyone, and it's easy not to wear one when we all carry phones everywhere. The thing I like about wearing a watch is the ability to easily set it five minutes fast. No matter how many years I run my watch fast, it always gives me a kick in the pants to get moving when I'm going to be late. Maybe I'm gullible, but whatever works, right? Are you analog, digital, smarty pants or bare wrist? Are you planning to switch anytime soon? Give us the time of day below.
The Extra Glow Of Charcoal Candles Is Really Mesmerizing
Sep 15, 5:04PM
Some people are all about candles. Dinner, baths, soy-based, scented. It's a whole thing. But candles can seem like more trouble than they're worth. These charcoal candlesticks from Japanese designer Eisuke Tachikawa have gravitas, though. There's something calming about them.
Brace Aims To Make Website Hosting Idiot Proof
Sep 15, 3:43PM
Here's something for Scooby and the gang. A new service called Brace is using Dropbox to organize and sync files to personal websites. Seemingly targeted at consumers looking for a simple, drag and drop alternative to things like FTP and Github, Brace is offering a clean and straightforward interface for managing files and styles on a website. But where did Brace come from?
Finally A Zombie-Fighting Toilet Brush Rifle With Scary Accuracy
Sep 15, 2:32PM
As Joerg points out, toilet brushes tipped with nine inch nails are a much-beloved form of ammo on the Slingshot Channel. But the old toilet brush crossbows didn't really have a sighting system. So Joerg got serious and created a toilet brush sniper rifle, complete with telescopic sight, that can shoot with precision from 22 yards. The brushes plowed through 10mm plywood board and went 4 inches into the archery mat behind. They also went through 1.5 inch oak plank. This is one of Joerg's more bizarre inventions, but it's pretty amazing to see how much he can hone concepts based on seemingly impractical materials like toilet brushes.
People With 10k Instagram Followers Stay Free In This Hotel
Sep 15, 1:04PM
A picture is worth a thousand words and having 10,000 Instagram followers is apparently worth more than $150. At the recently opened 1888 Hotel in Sydney, Australia guests can stay one night for free if they contact the media department to show their social media mettle and follow the hotel on Instagram, of course.
Requiem for a Dream: Drugs Are Bad, Mmmkay?
Sep 15, 1:30AM
When I saw Black Swan, I thought to myself "welp, I guess I'm a Darren Aronofsky fan now." And when I saw The Wrestler, I was sure. So when Requiem for a Dream finally came to Netflix Instant earlier this month, I completely was out of excuses to not watch it. Man this movie is good. Man it makes me feel bad.
Pavement: 5-4=Unity
Sep 15, 12:30AM
I'm something of an uncultured swine when it comes to jazz, so weird little Pavement songs are about as close as I get to the real stuff. That being said, "5-4=Unity" is just tops for a swine like me, and maybe you'll dig it too.
The First 3D-Printed Gun Is Already in a Museum
Sep 14, 11:20PM
It was only a few months ago that the first fully 3D-printed gun was successfully fired. And it's already made its way to a museum's permanent collection. Not bad for a youngun'.
Oh snap!
Sep 14, 10:56PM
Oh snap! Looks like Siri is technically (and quietly) leaving beta with the rollout of iOS 7.
What It's Like to Spend a Year in the Beautiful Wastes of Antarctica
Sep 14, 10:10PM
Antarctica is an isolated, frigid desert of ice and snow. It's practically another planet. And it can be staggeringly beautiful. Ian Hey did something most of us would never dream of and spent a year there. This is what it was like.
