Bill Cosby: I Luv Myself Better Than I Luv Myself
Aug 26, 1:00AM
I really think this is one of the funniest things ever. I know that's a big statement, and I'm definitely not approaching it objectively because I used to listen to the album on my Dad's record player when I was little, but seriously this track is gold.
A Crew Demolished The Wrong House Two Different Times
Aug 26, 12:09AM
Look, we all know how it is. You're at work, but your mind is somewhere else. It happens. You can't be too hard on yourself. Ideally your lack of attention wouldn't result in the wrongful demolition of two houses, but you're only human, right?
Venus, Please Be More Of A Badass In This Photo
Aug 25, 11:12PM
This looks like your brain on drugs, but it's actually a rare solar eclipse from last June in which Venus moved between the Sun and the Earth the way the Moon usually does. Venus looked like a thinner and thinner crescent until it was perfectly aligned with the Sun, creating a Venusian annular eclipse with a ring of fire. The Solar Dynamics Observatory imaged the Sun in three colors of UV light, producing data for this image. The next Venusian solar eclipse will occur in 2117, so you'll have time to enjoy this photo for awhile before it's challenged by something even crazier. [APOD]
Yeah, What's The Deal With Clapping?
Aug 25, 9:57PM
Sometimes I have an out of body moment where I see myself as an audience member and think about how dumb-looking the whole process is. You sit somewhere. You gape at something and don't monitor your facial expression because you assume no one is observing you, and then often, you clap. It's definitely a cultural tradition, but sometimes it just feels like an instinct. I sometimes find myself clapping at borderline inappropriate times seemingly because it's a reaction my body is volunteering to perform.
A Million Cockroaches Escaped From A Chinese Farm And Are On The Move
Aug 25, 8:33PM
According to the Agence France-Presse, "at least" one million cockroaches escaped a nursery in Jiangsu, China where they were being farmed for traditional medicine applications like cancer and inflammation treatments. The bugs got away because of an "unknown perpetrator" who tampered with the plastic greenhouse where they were being raised.
The Laziest Gift In The World Just Got Lazier
Aug 25, 7:40PM
The Facebook Gifts feature was supposed to kill Amazon or blow up the world or something. The place reminding you of your best friend's birthday could also help you get a gift and then publicly show off what a great friend you were for remembering and buying a gift. Genius.
How Do You Scroll On A Trackpad?
Aug 25, 6:06PM
On July 21, 2011, the day before Joe Brown began his 1.5 years as editor-in-chief of Gizmodo, he wrote 16 moving and influential words. "Fuck Natural Scrolling. This Is Bullshit. Yours truly, a concerned Lion user. Returning to unnatural scrolling." Lion had debuted almost two months prior, introducing natural or inverted scrolling. Ever since that fateful summer of 2011, Windows users have been finding ways to adopt it, and tons of Mac users have happily adjusted. Young ones may not even remember anything else. But as Brown so eloquently points out, users can turn natural scrolling off if they don't like it. And Windows still defaults to "unnatural" scrolling.
Amtrak Chose Not To Deluge Penn Station During Hurricane Sandy
Aug 25, 6:00PM
While Hurricane Sandy raged over the New York metropolitan area, the underground infrastructure of the city began to flood. Now Amtrak is revealing that they could have let Penn Station flood instead of the Hudson River tunnels, using a long-forgotten barrier designed to protect the city during World War II.
Little Robots Turn Marker Squiggles Into Sound
Aug 25, 5:04PM
All the little droids zipping around the Star Wars universe seemed sort of frantically aimless. Where were they going? These little robots look similar but their mission is clear. Follow the black circuits and turn untold scribbling into music.
Google Glass Has The Fashion Bug
Aug 25, 4:27PM
We all know that Glass is kind of a big deal for Google right now. Or whatever. The #IfIHadGlass explorer program is going strong, and the product is attempting to prove its usefulness in a bunch of different markets. In fact it may be starting to feel overblown and even tiresome. But if Google is going to bank on this product in ways that we can imagine (targeted advertising) and ways that we can't (Skynet?) they're probably not gonna let up until Glass is everywhere. Even high fashion.

The NSA Has Even Listened In On Encrypted UN Communications
Aug 25, 2:49PM
According to documents read by Der Spiegel, the NSA was able to bypass the United Nations' videoconferencing system in summer 2012 and decrypted 446 internal communications in three weeks for a total of 458. Der Spiegel quoted the documents (translated from German) as saying that the hack had, "a dramatic improvement of the data from video teleconferencing and the ability to decrypt this traffic."
Whole Foods Is Selling LPs Now
Aug 25, 1:29PM
33⅓ rpm records have been around for 65 years and in that time they've come and gone. And come back again. Apparently the nation's few remaining record stores, stamped out by lack of demand, are suddenly not enough, so Whole Foods has begun selling vinyl at five locations in and around LA, including West Hollywood, Santa Barbara and Venice. Even the New York Public Library, though not known to make money off of, well, anything, missed out on the resurgence by about a week.
Who Here Thinks Bigger Phones Are Better?
Aug 25, 12:22PM
While it hasn't been talked about recently, I know a lot of people think the next iPhone needs to be bigger, like the Galaxy S4.
Elon Musk Wants to Build the Iron Man Hologram UI For Real
Aug 25, 12:34AM
The hologram interfaces Tony Stark uses in Iron Man are awesome, no doubt. But they also aren't real. Yet. Elon Musk has been cooking up something very Stark-y, and he's planning to show it off soon.
Jim White: Wordmule
Aug 24, 11:20PM
Do you watch Breaking Bad? If not, what is wrong with you and also you are missing out because—among many, many other fantastic things—it recently featured the fantastically weird "Wordmule" by Jim White.
The AI Effects Team Controlled This Robo-Puppet While Buried Alive
Aug 24, 10:09PM
AI had its narrative problems, sure. But it didn't have a problem with the awesomeness of its practical effects, specifically the awesomeness of this fully kinetic, crippled android puppet. It's so good that the robo-carnage is almost disturbing.
How Messy Is Your Stash of Spare Cables?
Aug 24, 9:00PM
Maybe it's a drawer. Maybe it's a shoebox, or a garbage bag, or a writhing, almost-sentient beast that is going to strangle you one of these days. But somewhere, you're bound to have a hideous mess of cords and wires stashed away. The question is: which one of us has the worst?
The First Antarctic Sunrise After Months of Night Is Breathtaking
Aug 24, 8:12PM
The sun just rose in Antarctica. And that's kind of a big deal since it set back in May. It's beautiful, sure, but it must also be a huge relief.
DSLR Stolen By An Alligator Was Rescued After Eight Months
Aug 24, 7:08PM
Dropping your phone is bad. Dropping your DSLR is worse. Dropping your DSLR by a bunch of alligators is even worser. And dropping your DSLR and having it stolen by an alligator is the worsetest. Just ask Mario Aldecoa. Luckily he got his gear back. After eight months.
Why Gold iPhones Make Sense, A Head in a Particle Accelerator, and More
Aug 24, 6:00PM
You want a gold iPhone? Well it's probably coming regardless. But in the meantime, we've got plenty of other stuff to talk about. How about ancient jewelry from space, an optical illusion that lets you see your own brain waves, a jet that takes off like a UFO, the weirdest Russian hovercraft landing and more. Check it out!
Building a Highway Is Way More Complicated Than You'd Think
Aug 24, 5:00PM
There's way more to building a road than just slathering some asphalt all over the ground. The process is actually pretty involved, with a bunch of steps you probably hadn't thought of. And even a little bit of art to it.
The Most Bizarre Spacecraft Landings Ever
Aug 24, 4:43PM
Last week's test of an Orion space capsule splashdown recovery got me thinking. Surely not every time someone comes down from space it's not going to go according to plan, right? It turns out, it definitely hasn't.
Surprise: NSA Agents Use All-Seeing Power to Spy on Their Crushes
Aug 24, 4:09PM
It's only reasonable to assume that men or women with near unbounded power to spy on the public would eventually use that power to peek at people they are sexually interested in. Well, now you don't have to assume it, because the NSA is admitting it.
How to Find Your Missing Phone
Aug 24, 3:00PM
Oh boy, now you've done it. Not only are you supremely hungover from last night's rager, but your phone is nowhere to be found. Could you have left it at the bar, in a cab, in the gutter somewhere? Who knows! But don't panic, there's a host of apps that do. Here's how to find your phone when it goes missing.
