Spotify Is Making Sharing Songs More Like Facebook Messaging
Aug 05, 4:01AM
Over the next week, Spotify will roll out a few new features to its web and mobile interfaces that'll make getting to the music you want faster. The coolest of the bunch is that Spotify it will be threading its music sharing features so that it'll look more like a long conversation on other platforms.
John Coltrane: Bessie's Blues
Aug 05, 1:00AM
I have this chart as my ringtone. Anytime anyone calls me this is what I hear. Except my phone is almost always on silent, but whatever. The point is, "Bessie's Blues" is a great tune. And it's interesting because it's the only uptempo track on Coltrane's 1964 album Crescent, which has some pretty dark stuff going on.
Costa Rica Is Actually Closing All Of Its Zoos
Aug 05, 12:00AM
Beginning in March 2014, the two government-owned zoos in Costa Rica will be closed. The country is known for prioritizing environmental conservation, and zoo closures are a major step that animal rights and environmental advocates have been supporting worldwide for years. And Costa Rica really doesn't need artificial diversity given that the country houses 500,000 species of organisms, or four percent of all known species.
Jetblue's Cabin Redesign Is A Big Step Up . . . For Some People
Aug 04, 11:16PM
JetBlue has a new design scheme for their Airbus A321s, used on transcontinental flights. In addition to the usual 143 economy seats, these planes will have actual "class" seating for the first time with 16 business class seats and four business class "suites." Apparently Jetblue had to file a special request with the FAA for business class.
Fall Into This Mesmerizing Timelapse Of Famous European Buildings
Aug 04, 10:21PM
Even if you've never seen them in person, we've all gotten glimpses of the Palace of Westminster or the Arc de Triomphe on television, in magazines or wherever. And most likely those brief encounters have even been high res. But Luke Shepard's Nightvision takes images of famous European architecture to a whole new level.
A Moon With The Most Volcanic Activity Of Anything In The Solar System
Aug 04, 9:06PM
This moon looks even more like it's made from green cheese than ours does, but it's not. Lame. Io, the innermost moon of Jupiter, is the most volcanically active body in our solar system because of gravitational "tides" exerted by Jupiter and its other moons. And the constantly flowing lava gives Io's surface frequent makeovers.
Baseball's Downtime Will Be Less Painful With 360 Degree Replays
Aug 04, 7:41PM
Given that baseball is America's pastime, it's kind of frowned upon to even talk about the game's . . . slower . . . moments. But they exist. On the flip side, baseball has great drama over contentious plays. And, as with football, so much could be explored if there was a way to get total 360 views of tough-to-call moments. So a company called Replay Technologies is working on it.
These Protein Bars Are Made Of Crickets
Aug 04, 7:23PM
If I had a truly sophisticated palate and open mind I wouldn't even blink when I read that there was cricket flour in my granola bar. But I am unrefined and simple. The idea of a cricket bar makes me simultaneously concerned and curious. For some reason I feel like "slow roasted and milled crickets" could be good.
Can We Just Talk About America's Funniest Home Videos For A Minute?
Aug 04, 5:59PM
Groundbreaking essays and eloquent commentaries have almost certainly been written on this issue, but I'm just looking for some real talk. Can we all agree that nothing new has really happened since the cultural moment that produced America's Funniest Home Videos? I mean sure the devices we're using to film our dumbassery are more powerful and ubiquitous. And yeah we don't have to go through Bob Saget to get them out there anymore. But the way we use all those camera apps, Vine and now Google Glass seems so eerily similar to what people instinctually began pointing their camcorders at in the 80s.
Grid Has The Organization Of A Spreadsheet Without Those Pesky Number
Aug 04, 5:01PM
I've definitely used Excel for some wordy stuff. It's not blasphemous exactly, but making charts full of apartment listings, square footage, amenity notes, broker e-mail addresses, and links to photos doesn't really make use of Excel's formula wielding, number crunching prowess. But a former Excel developer who knows this dirty little secret, built an app that's all blissful spreadsheet organization, no numbers.
Refoldable Cardboard Furniture Makes It Cheap And Easy To Mosey On
Aug 04, 3:35PM
When you're moving and you have a lot of IKEA furniture, you know what you should do. You should take it apart, transport it and then put it back together on the other end. You know this. You consider this. And then you create a last minute flash sale on Craig's List, get whatever money you can from all that MALM, and re-buy down the line. Chairigami is trying to end this cycle.
A 1944 Electromagnetic Radiation Poster Makes Learning Retro Chic
Aug 04, 2:40PM
There are lots of interactions and fields around us all the time that we can't see. Like gravity. We can always count on gravity to be there when we trip and face plant. And we interact with all different frequencies on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation every day, which is usually fine and sometimes deadly. And you might be feeling good about all this physical awareness, but don't. People have known about this stuff for a long time and they've been making unbelievably detailed infographics about it for at least 70 years.
Now You Can Live Stream On YouTube Without Being A Queen Bee
Aug 04, 1:25PM
The internet is a constant popularity contest, and everyone is trying to collect followers, friends, shares, likes, hearts, views, +1s etc. You know the soul crushing drill. But YouTube wants to change the conversation. They've lowered the bar so you only need 100 or more subscribers to be able to live stream.
The Front Bottoms: Au Revoir (Adios)
Aug 04, 1:00AM
Have trouble saying goodbye? No problem; let the Front Bottoms do it for you. You'll enjoy it, I promise.
You'll Wish You Had a Reason to Make This DIY Magnet Vacuum
Aug 04, 12:00AM
Having to sweep up thousands of tiny metal shavings is admittedly a pretty uncommon chore. But doing it by using a super powerful neodymium magnet to just suck it all up and drop it in a box looks like such a freakin' blast. I'd take that over washing dishes any day.
Mars Would Be a Hipster Paradise If Rovers Were Into Instagram
Aug 03, 11:00PM
Just after Mars rover Curiosity touched down, it sent home a selfie worthy of Instagram. But what if it was actually using Instagram? Nikos Kantarakias figured he might as well find out what that'd look like.
The worst flight you can possibly imagine apart from crashing
Aug 03, 10:59PM
Imagine being trapped in a plane with six toilets and 26 passengers suffering constant explosive diarrhea and violent vomiting for 13 hours. Imagine it and shiver. That's what happened in this Qantas flight from Santiago de Chile to Sydney, Australia.
Disposable Spy Computers Are Disturbingly Easy and Cheap to Make
Aug 03, 10:00PM
Be honest, how often do you use unsecured Wi-Fi for something you shouldn't? You know, just a quick Facebook login at Starbucks. If you've done it even once, that's too much, because making a secret spy computer that can steal all that data is dumb easy. And cheap to boot.
This Transforming Concept Apartment Is a Dozen Rooms at Once
Aug 03, 9:00PM
Here at Gizmodo, we love us some transforming apartments. On top of being space-efficient, they are just so damn cool. And this partially prototyped concept by students at TU Delft is no exception.
What Is the Best Song To Type To?
Aug 03, 8:00PM
Different folks like different music for different kinds of work. Some don't like background tunes at all. But when it comes to typing—real non-stop "I'll clean it up later" typing—you can get into a serious groove, and the right soundtrack can make it feel flat-out incredible.
Obama Just Vetoed a Proposed Ban on Apple Products
Aug 03, 6:59PM
Back in June, as part of the never-ending Samsung vs Apple patent war, Samsung won a skirmish that could have ultimately lead to a ITC sales ban on certain Apple products including the iPhone 4 and 3G iPad 2 in the US. Well the victory was short lived; the WSJ is reporting that Obama just issued a big ol' veto.
The Best Internet Mistake, Hands On with the Awesome Moto X, And More
Aug 03, 6:00PM
This week, we grew by a phone. That's right, the long-rumored Moto X finally burst onto the scene and it is awesome. But that's not all. We saw the bestest Internet mistake, had a triumphant victory in iOS icon design, explored Henry Ford's lost utopia, and more. Check it out!
Chinese Hackers Have Been Caught Hijacking a Decoy US Water Plant
Aug 03, 4:54PM
Chinese hackers have been harassing the US in a series of cyberattacks, but we've started trying to talk it out and cool this all down. But in the meantime, a security researcher has just revealed that he caught a team of Chinese hackers hijacking a fake water plant he set up. And aside from spotting the fake, they knew exactly what they were doing.

Aug 03, 4:15PM
Ever wanted to take pictures like an astronaut? Now's your chance. There's an original Hasselblad 500EL Electric Camera kit on Ebay right now. Just like the ones that were used on the lunar Apollo missions. If you act fast—and have a spare $74,950.00 laying around—it could be yours.
How to Root Your Nexus, HTC One, or Samsung Galaxy S4
Aug 03, 3:00PM
Android offers a wide variety of advanced customization options, but that's only scratching the surface of everything you can do with Google's open source operating system. With root access you can get down to the system level and tweak things to your liking, even going so far as completely replacing the OS.
