What's the Worst Ringtone You've Ever Heard?
Jul 22, 8:43AM
Today's XKCD raises an important question: what's the most irritating ringtone you've ever had the misfortune to hear?

WSJ: Apple Is Testing Bigger Screens for iPhone and iPad
Jul 22, 7:43AM
The Wall Street Journal is adding weight to rumors of growing iPhone screens sizes, publishing a report which suggests that Apple is testing larger displays for both the iPhone and iPad.
Imogen Heap: Hide And Seek
Jul 22, 1:00AM
I've always liked this song. It's made of layered voice tracks all sung by Imogen Heap and backed up with some keyboard synth shenanigans. Of course, we all remember it for the bridge aka the "mmm watcha say" portion, which was apparently featured prominently in the climactic scene of The OC series finale. I wouldn't know because I never watched The OC, except that then SNL made a hilarious Digital Short spoofing The OC and prominently featuring some "mmm watcha say"s. Good stuff. [Spotify, Amazon, iTunes]
Whoa This Timelapse Of Reflected Cities Is Nuts
Jul 22, 12:00AM
Photographer Michael Shainblum shot video footage in a bunch of cities: Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They're all famous cities that people photograph and explore every day so he wanted to do something different. And kind of out there. He moves from simple reflections to crazy kaleidoscopic effects to create a completely trippy and amazing sequence. It took about four months to put this video together, and hopefully Shainblum thinks it was worth it. Because it was totally worth it. [Colossal]
A Backpack Made Of Kevlar Could Protect You In A War Zone
Jul 21, 11:27PM
In the U.S. most of us are lucky enough to have never lived in a combat zone or area of extreme violence where our personal safety is always at risk. But this backpack was designed for that scenario. The Rhino Skin pack is made of Kevlar and is meant to protect vital organs against flying debris created by an explosion.
Millions Of Cell Phones Could Be Vulnerable To This SIM Card Hack
Jul 21, 10:07PM
With the NSA leaks going full force it probably won't sound like news at all that a German cryptographer claims to have hacked a SIM card. But that's never been done before (as far as we know . . .) so it's kind of a big deal, and shows that millions of phones are potentially vulnerable.
"Teach The Witches A Lesson" With A Slingshot That Shoots Brooms
Jul 21, 8:40PM
Joerg begins today's video by saying, "As you know, I don't like witches." And in fact, I did not specifically remember this preference of his. But I can believe it. After watching a Harry Potter rerun this week, Joerg finally realized the hazard that quidditch and other flying broom sports pose to our safety. And he decided to make a 6.5 foot slingshot to better defend himself and his family from this imminent threat.
An Unusually Close Look At The Development Of Facebook Home
Jul 21, 7:42PM
Facebook Home had its Android-only release in April and it's been sort of proliferating a little bit maybe? ever since. It lives in a weird space between operating systems and apps, but it's meant to be something you don't over-think. So don't think about. Just let it be a mostly successful immersive experience. That's it. Oh plus this 50 minute video. But mainly it speaks for itself.
Using it right now.
Jul 21, 6:31PM
Using it right now. I travel a lot. In hotels, it's convenient to use my AirPort Express. Then my computer and iPhones are on the same wifi network and wifi sync'ing takes place. Also, I only pay for hotel internet for a single device. I prefer Super 8 motels where internet is included but my hosts put me in fancy expensive hotels where you pay up to $30 a day for internet.
How Often Do You Use Ethernet These Days?
Jul 21, 6:14PM
I recently helped a friend pick out a USB-ethernet dongle for her MacBook Air. The Wi-Fi at her office goes in and out and she wanted to make sure she had a consistent connection when she brought her laptop in. That got me thinking that I haven't used ethernet on my laptop in a long time. But for certain tasks and devices there are still benefits. I have my smartTV plugged into ethernet (above) even though it's Wi-Fi ready, because I didn't want to deal with network glitches and password changes on a TV. How often have you busted out an ethernet cable lately? Connect to the World Wide Web below.
The Navy Accidentally Bombed The Great Barrier Reef . . . Sort Of
Jul 21, 5:36PM
Okay so this whole thing isn't ideal, but it's also not as bad as it sounds. Basically on Tuesday there were two Navy AV-8B Harrier fighter jets that had launched from the USS Bonhomme Richard aircraft carrier and were doing a training exercise. They planned to drop bombs on Townshend Island bombing range, but were told by controllers that the area wasn't clear. The problem was that they didn't have enough fuel to land with such heavy loads. So they, you know, unloaded. Right onto the Barrier Reef.
Make Tricky And Beautiful Geometric Patterns In Isometric
Jul 21, 4:40PM
iOS has filters and drawing apps up the wazoo, so it can be hard to see the point of new ones. But Isometric allows you to create and manipulate designs and optical illusions that are weirdly compelling. It's something about starting from a blank screen and building such a dimensional pattern.
Check Out These Beautiful Photos From The Apollo 11 Moon Mission
Jul 21, 4:03PM
Yesterday was the 44th anniversary of the first time humans set foot upon the Moon, when the Lunar Module of Apollo 11 landed on July 20th, 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took plenty of stunning photos, and here are a few shots from angles you may not have seen before.
Alien Probes Could Already Be In Our Solar System According To Math
Jul 21, 3:30PM
If you've been trying to recall what makes theoretical math super fun, here's a reminder. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh published a paper in the International Journal of Astrobiology that examines how long it would take Voyager-sized probes to bop around the Milky Way and eventually encounter our solar system. The answer is not that long! Especially if the probes are using gravitational slingshotting and especially if they're self-replicating.
The World's Tallest Building Looks Badass From A Helicopter
Jul 21, 2:32PM
There's a lot to know about Dubai's towering Burj Khalifa. Every creak and every inch is constantly monitored and explored. But sometimes you just want to see something lit up in all its glory. And that's the point where you get in a helicopter and go take some awesome night shots. You have access to a helicopter, right?
Oh Right, Doctoring Photos Actually Still Takes A Long Time
Jul 21, 1:39PM
At this point doctored and enhanced photos are so ubiquitous that we tend to assume any photo we're looking at has gone through some type of processing. And programs like Photoshop are always releasing new tools and features to make these changes easier. But revising a photo for positive or nefarious reasons still takes time and skill. Luckily, we can count on internet denizens to have a lot of free time.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross: In Motion
Jul 21, 12:03AM
Look, when it broke that Trent Reznor was going to be involved in the soundtrack for The Social Network, I knew it was going to be good. And when I saw The Social Network back in 2010, I knew the soundtrack was good. But I only just sat down and really listened to it the other day and holy shit you guys, it is dope.
There's a Beautiful Chair Hiding in Your Washing Machine
Jul 20, 11:15PM
You can sit on a washing machine, but that doesn't make it a chair. A transformation like the one industrial designer Antonina pulled off does make it a chair, though. And there are even DIY instructions so you can try too, if you're into that sort of thing.
A Digital Print of Vintage Film Canisters Is Paradoxically Adorable
Jul 20, 10:18PM
Digital cameras are great and all, but it's OK to miss good old fashioned film if for no other reason than it looks nice in canister form. This lovely digital print by Peter Hamilton shows off some of the best old-school beauties in all their antiquated glory.
The Future of Virtual Reality Looks Super Creepy From the Outside
Jul 20, 9:19PM
OK, so Oculus Rift? Awesome. Virtual reality treadmill? Dope. Gun controllers? Well duh; you've played Duck Hunt. Put them all together and you should get something unbelievably amazing, right? Right?!
They're doing a Superman/Batman movie... but that's not the big news
Jul 20, 8:31PM
Man of Steel director Zack Snyder just came out and rocked our worlds at Comic-Con. Not just announcing that Batman will be in the Superman sequel — which he did with a cool-looking metallic Superman-Batman logo that drove the crowd nuts. But that was not the biggest deal.
Every Single Photoshop Filter in Two Bewildering Minutes
Jul 20, 8:05PM
What could be a better use of Photoshop filters than filtering Photoshop? That's exactly what Device did in this delightfully meta little Photoshop tribute. Warning: you might want to turn down your volume a bit.
Should You Bring Your Laptop on Vacation?
Jul 20, 7:00PM
I am going on vacation next week, and a couple of kind-hearted people with my best interests in mind have suggested that perhaps I leave my (work) laptop at home. I did my best not to laugh in their faces because that is ridiculous. Of course I am bringing my laptop.
