NSA Surveillance Scandal: Snowden In Moscow, Asks Ecuador for Asylum
Jun 24, 3:07AM
Edward Snowden is reportedly seeking political asylum in Ecuador after arriving to Moscow today. The US has revoked his passport. The former NSA contractor has been on the run since he first revealed details of Verizon's participation in a telecommunications industry program to store information on all telephone calls, and then broke news of the NSA/Silicon Valley PRISM system that watches over the whole Interent. Developing...
Biking With Growlers Just Got Easier
Jun 24, 1:00AM
There are always problems when you're trying to balance a lot of stuff on a bike. It either all in bags on the handlebars, or in one of your arms or in a backpack. It messes with your center of gravity. But at least with these Growler Cages you can transport your growlers (as you often do) from point A to point B without having to worry about anything.
Steve Martin: Wally On The Run
Jun 23, 11:53PM
It's not always a good idea for famous people to make albums. Example: William Shatner. Alternate Example: Paris Hilton. But Steve Martin, who has always been sort of vaguely known for his banjo playing, has made roots music his priority in the last four or five years and is totally nailing it. His most recent album, recorded with Edie Brickell, came out in April. He's also touring right now with Brickell and The Steep Canyon Rangers, the band he worked with on his second most recent album. Even if you don't like bluegrass, his stuff is pretty accessible and he jokes around on a bunch of the tracks.
This Is How Much Pot Is Seized At The U.S.-Mexico Border
Jun 23, 11:14PM
The Center for Investigative Reporting is doing a really serious and extensive multi-part series on the drug trade and border patrol at the U.S.-Mexico border. There are budget analyses, infographics and policy reviews. This is legit reporting. But you know what, sometimes you get so wrapped up in your work that you don't realize you're getting a contact high. It happens. And it's the only thing that explains this video.
Taking X-Rays Of Women In Corsets Was A Haunting Use Of New Technology
Jun 23, 10:11PM
Any tech that allows humans a new type of insight is inevitably turned on ourselves. We want to know what else we can find out from peering in on our bodies or minds in a new way. Of course, x-ray machines were pretty much used from the start for that purpose, but it's amazing to see these 1908 photos examining how a fashion trend was impacting health.
Flytecam Is A Streamlined GoPro Challenger
Jun 23, 9:27PM
Whether you need another option or not, Flytecam is a 1080p POV video camera that's looking to compete. It has specs that land it between GoPro's lowest and middle tier offerings, but it's supposed to be cheaper and doesn't require waterproof or shock resistant cases.
A Rifle-Turned-Slingshot That Shoots Knives Is Terrifying
Jun 23, 7:50PM
This week Joerg busted out the deactivated M16A1 rifle (which he obviously has) and turned it into a slingshot. The launcher band mounts on the underside of the rifle barrel, and the weapon shoots two Cold Steel "Hide Out" neck knives aka really scary/sharp little suckers.
What Are You Doing About Light Bulbs These Days?
Jun 23, 6:18PM
There are the LED lightbulbs you know you should buy, and then there are the insane 10 for $10 sales that try to lure you back to the incandescent days. But between everlasting light bulbs, app-controlled light bulbs and light bulbs that do the dishes and see into the future, it's pretty clear that change is upon us. Bulb life, light quality and price all factor in. What do you buy and why? Illuminate us below.
Okay, Yeah The Surface Of Venus Looks Really Hot
Jun 23, 5:18PM
It's kind of hard to scope things out on Venus because the surface probes we send get obliterated pretty quickly by the heat. Pictures of Venus' surface do exist, though, and this one shows "large circular domes" that look pretty darn hot. The domes are thought to be magma erupting through vents, in a process that happens on Earth too, called volcanism. Get it? Volcanoes? Get it? Okay. Moving on.
A Weather App That Suggests The Best Times To Do Things
Jun 23, 4:14PM
If there are weather apps, calendar apps and to do list apps, there should be an app that spits out an optimal schedule for you to follow. What's the point of jogging in the rain and then doing laundry when the sun comes out? Or maybe you like to run in the rain because it cools you off. Or you're really pale and trying to avoid direct sun. Whatever. It's between you and Foresee now.
Fruits And Vegetables Are More Aware Than You Think
Jun 23, 2:48PM
You might not think that spinach knows what's up, but the produce in your fridge is still alive and aware. Which is creepy. But kind of awesome. According to new research, fruits and vegetables still have circadian rhythms up to a week after being harvested. And they respond to light patterns by producing chemical compounds to protect themselves against herbivores.
Position These Lamps To Shine A Light On Corruption, Or Just Anything
Jun 23, 1:20PM
Some spaces are awkward. Dark corners or cavernous closets that could really use some light. And tap lights don't always cut it in terms of brightness or aesthetic quality. But Australian designer Flynn Talbot is working on the situation. His aluminum and steel lights, called Latitude, can go anywhere and point in any direction.
A Saturday's Work at Gizmodo in Mouse Movement
Jun 23, 1:00AM
While you folks are doing your Saturday thing and maybe checking out ol' Giz now and then, somebody's gotta write it. That somebody is me, and this is what it looks like. From a cursor's-eye perspective anyway.
Ween: Where'd the Cheese Go?
Jun 23, 12:00AM
Earlier today I found myself searching for my keys and—lo and behold—a certain song popped into my head. And what a wonderful tune it is. Both versions.
Keep Your Eyes on the Sky for Tonight's Gigantic Supermoon
Jun 22, 11:00PM

A Typeface Designed To Thwart Spying Computers
Jun 22, 9:03PM
If people are snooping on your textual communications and you don't like it, there are a couple of things you can do. You can try to block the prying eyes, you can stop saying things you don't want to be seen, or you can make your messages make no sense to the outside. The anti-authoritarian typeface ZXX is shooting for that last one.
This Walking Lego Steampunk Ship is Terrifying!
Jun 22, 8:31PM
As far as post-apocalyptic, steampunk-themed trading ships go, this MOC build is pretty impressive. Jason Allemann's landship, Amagosa, is based on the "Strandbeest," a badass kinetic sculpture created by Theo Jansen. It's mesmerizing to watch this Lego machine in action, but the tarantula-esque movements of the walker sorta freak me out (in the sense that I'm reminded of the giant mechanical spider from that terrible film, Wild Wild West).
How Messy Is Your Computer's Desktop?
Jun 22, 8:00PM
We all aspire to a certain amount of digital desktop cleanliness, but I think rather few of us actually keep up on it. As the days go by, the clutter builds bit by bit, and it's just irritating enough to be unpleasant, but not a big enough deal to actually clean up.
Building the Animatronic Terror That Trounced a T-Rex
Jun 22, 6:58PM
Jurassic Park III may not be your favorite movie in the series. But that doesn't mean its effects weren't fantastic. In fact, the somewhat random third entry in the series boasted the biggest animatronic 'saur yet: the Spinosaurus. Stan Winston Studios recalls the details of that behemoth's construction, and it's wild to watch.
How the Xbox One Got Worse, What's Wrong With iOS 7 Icons, and More
Jun 22, 6:00PM
Microsoft pulled a huge U-turn this week by pulling all it's DRM, and we're just itching to tell you why that's horrible. While we're at it, we've got a first look at OSX Mavericks, a lesson on what's wrong with the iOS 7 icons, billion-year-old drinking water, a new subatomic particle, and a smartphone tripod that will blow you away. Dig in!
Why Your DVR Hates the Last Few Seconds of Shows So Much
Jun 22, 5:00PM
There's nothing quite like missing the very last seconds of that show you so painstakingly DVRed. Especially if that show is a live sporting event, and you explicitly told the damned box to keep going for an hour or two afterwards. It shouldn't have to be that way, though. And as Slate explains, there's a better world of perfect recording just across the pond.
Three Steps You Can Take to Protect Yourself From Online Spying
Jun 22, 4:00PM
The recent PRISM scandal has validated both the general public's growing unease with federal law enforcement agencies, and many of the fringe element's accusations about Big Brother's online behavior. Whether or not it's legal under the PATRIOT Act, just knowing that the government can rummage through your online life doesn't sit well with many folks. Here are some simple and effective ways of keeping your digital identity anonymous and your data your own.
Exactly How the NSA Is Getting Away With Spying on US Citizens
Jun 22, 3:00PM
The Guardian published a new batch of secret leaked FISA court and NSA documents yesterday, which detail the particulars of how government has been accessing Americans' emails without a warrant, in violation of the Constitution. The documents lay bare fundamental problems with the ineffectual attempts to place meaningful limitations on the NSA's massive surveillance program.
