Real Estate: All The Same
Jun 10, 1:00AM
Real Estate is a New Jersey-based band that formed in 2008. Their big thing is cyclical riffs, which you can really hear in "All The Same." I heard this song almost a year ago and it stuck with me, but I had no idea what it was. It would surface in my head every once and awhile and I would call my voicemail and record myself humming it or make a video on my computer. I also hummed it to anyone who would listen. No one recognized it, but they did come away feeling like I was pretty nuts. One day when I was singing part of it into Shazam for the millionth time it actually worked. It was the weirdest feeling to finally be able to listen to it. Glad that crazy era and this confessional are behind me. [Spotify, Amazon, iTunes]
An Upbeat Take On Brain Imaging
Jun 09, 11:39PM
Your brain is pretty important. If something's wrong you want a doctor to be able to peer in and see what's going on. But noninvasive scans are probably preferable to letting the spirits out of a little hole in your skull. Still, those scans usually have negative connotations, and Dutch painter Joris Kuipers is using CT and MRI scans as the inspiration for his 3D paintings.
A Window Into Google's Governing Design Principles
Jun 09, 10:39PM
We all know Google design aesthetic from the products we consume, but it's rare to get a look at the unifying themes and intentions from Google's perspective. Usually insight about those things can only come from attempting to reverse engineer the design direction. And that's probably not something that keeps you up nights. But now it's all been laid out for you.

Stunning Behind-the-Scenes Photos Show Iconic Movies in a New Light
Jun 09, 8:00PM
We love the magic of the movies, that trickery that lets us believe in beautiful robots, time-traveling scientists, wolf men, and flying superheroes. But sometimes it's fun to peek behind the curtain, and see the secrets and candid faces behind our favorite films.
Microbreweries and Ferns Have A Lot In Common
Jun 09, 8:00PM
Analogies are great because they trick us into learning when we think we're just talking about beer. Want to know how all those microbreweries survive among the big behemoth brands? Gotta learn about the biodiversity of ferns and trees in the forest to make it happen.
NSA Whistleblower Reveals Identity: "I Do Not Expect to See Home Again"
Jun 09, 6:45PM
An NSA employee working through outside contractors is the man behind the NSA leak. A former technical assistant for the CIA and current Booz Allen Hamilton employee, 29-year-old Edward Snowden worked with The Guardian to release his identity today.
What WWDC Announcements Would Warm The Cockles Of Your Heart?
Jun 09, 6:00PM
WWDC is tomorrow. Which is great because I think another week of rampant speculation about flat design would kill me (though if you're still looking for a straightforward explanation of what the heck that is we've got it). Especially because the latest rumor from John Gruber at Daring Fireball is that "all the leaks are wrong." You know what fine. FINE. Let's just go home.
Your Body Isn't That Much Smaller Than The Whole World
Jun 09, 5:15PM
Scale is kind of important when comparing two things. By some measures, one human body is way smaller than the whole Earth. But by others, like the number of bacteria on the skin's surface versus the number of people on the planet, a person wins out.
Facebook's Data Center Humidity "Challenge" Was Indoor Rain
Jun 09, 4:00PM
In 2011 Facebook reported that their first data center in Prineville, OR had a high humidity issue. Probably not the best condition for servers, sure. But it turns out that wonky temperature controls were actually causing condensation in the data center. Like indoor rain. Like it was literally raining in the server room.
"Murmur" Shows Room Noise On The Walls
Jun 09, 2:29PM
Make sure you don't mutter to yourself at Murmur, because your petty grievances will end up visualized on the wall. The project uses Raspberry Pi and openFrameworks to visualize and project LED simulations of the sound waves in a room.
T-Mobile Has Unlimited Data/Text Plus 100 Minutes For $30
Jun 09, 1:16PM
It's not a lot of gab time and T-Mobile's data speeds still tend to lag behind other major carriers, but for $30 a month this T-Mobile prepaid plan is cheap.
Watch a Young Louis CK Talk About His Amazing Toilet Photography
Jun 09, 1:00AM
Things were different in the 90s. MTV had music, for instance, and Louis CK had just slightly more hair. A clip featuring both of those things surfaced just recently, and provides a rare look into the past as the young Louis CK tears into—among other things—shitty avant garde photography.
Sum 41: Makes No Difference
Jun 09, 12:00AM
Chances are you're still tired of hearing Fat Lip from way back in the early 2000s, but don't let that ruin Sum 41 for you. Their best song came before all that. Those of you who were into Dave Mirra's Pro BMX 2 may know where I am going with this, but the rest of you are in for a treat.
Why the Metadata the NSA Has on You Matters
Jun 08, 11:00PM
In response to the recent news reports about the National Security Agency's surveillance program, President Barack Obama said today, "When it comes to telephone calls, nobody is listening to your telephone calls." Instead, the government was just "sifting through this so-called metadata." The Director of National Intelligence James Clapper made a similarcomment last night: "The program does not allow the Government to listen in on anyone's phone calls. The information acquired does not include the content of any communications or the identity of any subscriber."
This Papercraft BBQ Will Make You Hungry Enough to Eat a Notebook
Jun 08, 10:10PM
Summertime is upon us, and that means it's grilling season. You could go down to the store to pick up everything you need for a tasty BBQ, or you could just make do with what you can find on your desk. That second option is remarkably nice-lookin' but probably not the most delicious.
Here's the Official Government Fact Sheet on What PRISM Is and Does
Jun 08, 9:18PM
When all the PRISM news broke, it didn't take long for the US Government to fess up. President Obama even made a (bummer of a) statement on it. Now, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has put out an official fact sheet about what PRISM is and isn't, according to the US Government. Think of it like an official FAQ.

How Fallout from Nuke Tests Just Proved that Brain Cells Regenerate
Jun 08, 8:00PM
Before the Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963 barred all aboveground, subsea, and orbital nuclear weapons testing, the world's nations were popping off nukes like champagne bottles on New Years. Surprisingly, that sprinkling of high-energy particles was actually quite beneficial, to science at least, as it's just helped solve a longstanding dispute in human physiology—can the brain regrow neurons? Short answer: sorta.

New PRISM Slide Shows NSA Taking Data Directly From Company Servers
Jun 08, 5:55PM
There's been a lot of speculation that maybe PRISM doesn't take data directly from private company's servers, and that all the denials you've heard are carefully worded to deny only direct access. According to this new PRISM slide from The Guardian though, the NSA does have its hooks directly in the companies that are denying it.
How One Man Is Turning the Eiffel Tower into a Song
Jun 08, 5:23PM
If you want to make music, you've got a plenty of different instruments to choose from. But if you want to make really unique (or weird) music, you've got to find something off the beaten path. That's why Joseph Bertolozzi chose the Eiffel Tower.
How to Get Practically Free Wi-Fi Practically Anywhere

Your Nexus 7 is Wi-Fi-only, but if Verizon thinks that you're ponying up $10 a month just for the privilege of tethering it to your phone, they've got another thing coming. Fact is, wireless Internet access is increasingly like potable water or pornography; with so much available for free, there's no reason to pay. You've just got to know where to look.
