Jun 08, 5:00AM
You've seen hundreds of 'em. You hold a few dear to your heart. You love seeing that Impact font. You laugh at those who call it meh-meh or mimi (even if you once did). You think you know the Internet, so you think you know what a meme is. But how did memes take over? Probably by being memes.
The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: Garbage
Jun 08, 4:00AM
This haunting animation by Pavel proves that, even in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity has been reduced to nearly-mindless husks and raised as a power source for their trash-spewing robotic overlords, there aint's shit to watch on TV.
The Tech Companies in PRISM Aren't Telling the Complete Truth
Jun 08, 3:13AM
Apple. Facebook. Google. Microsoft. Yahoo. AOL. YouTube. Skype. PalTalk. The tech companies that have been associated with PRISM have all unequivocally denied involvement with the spying program. But are they speaking the whole truth? Or are they simply using choice words to evade the real question? It definitely doesn't look like the whole truth.

But not for Maria Steinmayr, who has miraculously survived a failed Extreme BASE jump from the top of the Gran Bali Hotel in Benidorm, Spain. Her parachute failed, making her crash against the building. Hard. Miraculously, she only got a few contusions.

Jun 08, 2:00AM
Everyone on Earth's immediate reaction when they first saw The Internship movie trailer was holy crap this is terrible. And then holy crap what happened to Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. What Happens When You Use a Giant Construction Drill on a Car?
Jun 08, 1:00AM
It's quite simple really, the car gets completely destroyed, screwed and mangled in every which way possible. The TR-150 construction drill completely eats the car alive to the point where it can no longer drill it anymore, it has to smash and pulverize it. Using construction tools for destruction is a beautiful thing. [BayShoreSystems via Laughing Squid]

Any mischief-maker worth his property damage knows a thing or two about using spud-based projectile weaponry. Our good pal Joerg Sprave is no different, though his weapon of choice uses wood and rubber bands instead of PVC and hairspray.
Warmly, Vine, Google Keyboard, and More
Jun 07, 10:00PM
This week Android got a few long-awaited additions to their app lineup, most notably the previously iOS-only Vine and a version of Google Keyboard made just for Android. Not to mention a few fun little apps that, while not technically necessary, do make our lives just a bit easier. And that's what it's all about.
Eater, Moment, Instafeed, and More
Jun 07, 10:00PM
Whether or not we can really afford to, it's hard to start slacking off a bit once the warm weather rolls around. And the bounty of apps making the process that much easier certainly doesn't help. We can't help but love them anyways, though. This week's app selection is full of goodies to take the pressure off slacking off.
Hulu Plus, Wikiweb, and More
Jun 07, 10:00PM
Our lives our filled with aggregators meant to make finding what we're actually looking for a bit easier. Unfortunately, most of these just aggravate the process. This, week, though we offer a few apps to help browsing and, forgive us, "curating" your info a pleasant and, dare I say it, fun process.

Jun 07, 9:42PM
"I applied for a writer job at Palantir," a California journalist tells Front! "They specialize in using artificial intelligence to analyze data, something like that. My [Republican friend] works there. I have a few tidbits from the hiring process—they are sort of menacing, in retrospect." It's apparently a tough place to get a job.
Obama's Now Picking Foreign Targets for a Future Cyberwar
Jun 07, 9:23PM
What a week ol' Barry's been having in Washington! First, there was that scoop about the NSA spying on all the Verizon customers. Then, there was this PRISM scandal about how intelligence agencies are basically spying on everyone all the time. Now, there's news that he's making a hitlist of foreign countries to hit with cyberattacks when the time is right. There's probably some spying involved in that, too.

This Trash-Sorting Robot Could Revolutionize Recycling
Jun 07, 9:11PM
We've seen a lot of frivolous applications for robotic arms: Artisanal cocktail making. Slow pit stops. Whatever's going on here. Meanwhile, in Finland, a precociously-named company called ZenRobotics has figured out how use them to solve one of the biggest problems with recycling: automatic sorting.
How to Make Instant Barrel-Aged Cocktails
Jun 07, 9:00PM
If you've been spending too much time in bars lately—and we certainly hope you have been—you've likely noticed the rise of barrel-aged cocktails. The technique takes some of your favorite mixed drinks, mellows them out, and adds some layers of complexity. There is, however, a barrier to entry for most at-home barkeeps: Patience. Unless you know this shortcut.

You Don't Have To Be Cool on the Internet

It's confusing, and often contradictory. We've certainly told you what to do and what not to do plenty of times. But maybe it's time to throw out the script.

Why Is Anyone Surprised That the Government Spies on Us?
Jun 07, 7:48PM
Everybody from Tea Party patriots to left wing weirdos are up in arms over PRISM, the government's ultra secret surveillance program that's been reading Americans' emails, listening to their phone calls and raking through their Internet data—among other things—since 2007. Details of the program exploded onto the public stage this week just hours after news of the National Security Agency's (NSA) monitoring of Verizon phone records. But we now know that it's not just the NSA that's spying on people domestically, and it's not just Verizon that's getting caught in the middle. It's everybody.

Tour D-Day Normandy's Surreal Destruction in These Rare Color Photos
Jun 07, 7:40PM
Yesterday marked the 69th anniversary of D-day, the largest amphibious invasion in history and the beginning of the end for the Axis Powers. After 160,000 US, British, and Canadian troops stormed the beaches of Normandy and secured a foothold for the Allies, war photographer Frank Scherschel surveyed the French town's nearly complete destruction. Only a dwindling number of veterans witnesses the attack, but these unusual color photos bring us a bit closer to the action. Check out the full gallery of architectural annihilation over at Time Life.
