It's Amazing That the Same View of the Same Ocean and the Same Sky Can Look So Completely Different

Apr 02, 2:00AM

Here's a wonderfully colorful photo project by photographer Robert Weingarten that shows how psychedelic our world can get. Weingarten took a photo at 6:30 in the morning of the same view of Santa Monica Bay from his home in Malibu for an entire year. Even with all that sameness, each photo captures something completely different than before. More »

Holy Crap, A Woman Almost Got Run Over By a Train Because She Was Trying to Pick Up Her Phone from the Tracks

Apr 02, 1:00AM

Holy freaking smokes, almost getting hit by a train doesn't get closer than this. A young woman in Sao Paulo, Brazil had apparently dropped her phone onto the metro tracks and foolishly jumped down to retrieve it. Couple of problems with this situation: she couldn't get back on the platform, the train was coming into the station fast AND SHE PROBABLY WOULD"VE DIED. Miraculously, two guys managed to pull her out right before she would've gotten hit. It's terrifyingly close. More »

Watch a RC Plane Crash Into a RC Helicopter and Get Completely Destroyed

Apr 01, 11:00PM

If you want to skip the build up to the aerial crash, fast forward to about the 1:15 mark on the video to see an 80-inch RC plane with 50cc gas engine hit a RC helicopter and then immediately nosedive to its destruction. The plane clips one of its wings when it hits the chopper and immediately spirals down and slams into the ground. Gnarly. More »

Manhattan's Oldest Time-Keeping Sidewalk Has Been Ticking for Over a Century

Apr 01, 10:20PM

Deep in lower Manhattan, embedded in the sidewalk, is a clock that's been ticking since long before you knew what time was. Installed in 1889 with a single redesign in 1940, the timepiece has counted off hundreds of minutes, and tens of millions of seconds, all while withstanding the endless march of both time and the pedestrians above it. Officially NSFW: YouTube's Naked Lady Problem (NSFW) (Updated)

Apr 01, 9:24PM

Until last week, I'd never actually listened to anything that Robin Thicke had released. Then someone dropped Blurred Lines into our group chat. And, well, I liked it. Because, well, nekkid. Rather than disappear into a cloud of censorship, the YouTube left the video up for six days. More »

Apr 01, 9:00PM

Shoppers looking for the best price on Apple stuff recently may have noticed a mysterious Ebay store selling official Apple refurbs for less than Apple itself. Although Apple never confirmed their involvement, it was widely believed that they were behind Refurbished_Outlet because it sold official Apple refurbs with genuine Applecare. Today, there are no more products for sale through Refurbished_Outlet, and the store page brings you to an FAQ. More »

Piet Mondrian Inspired This Three-Piece Vase

Apr 01, 9:00PM

A Piet Mondrian painting is unmistakable for its big blocks of primary colors set in grids of horizontal and vertical black lines on a white background. The Mondri 3 in 1 vase is very clearly inspired by the late De Stijl movement artist, and it breaks apart into three pieces so you can create your own neoplasticism masterpiece. More »

A Beautiful Meteorite That's Not Trying to Destroy the Planet

Apr 01, 8:40PM

Not all meteor strikes have to be scary, exploding harbingers of an apocalypse to come. More often, in fact, they're just pretty. This one just screaming on through the Northern Lights even moreso than most. More »

Our Favorite Soundbars, Streaming Boxes, Stoves, and More

Apr 01, 8:19PM

Winter's slowly winding down, and no doubt, the warm weather is beginning to beckon, what with the birds and the sunshine and the joyful frolicking and whatnot. And we'd be out there enjoying it, too... if this past month hadn't given us a whole slew of gadgets to stay inside drooling over. Ah well—the sun looks just as good from a window, anyway. A Slick Sony Mirrorless Camera Is Your Deal of the Day

Apr 01, 7:00PM

Mirrorless cameras fall into a tricky pricing valley. At $600, which is a common MSRP, they're in direct competition with starter DSLRs, which remain the best kind of camera to buy if you're seriously learning photography. But they're also feeling pressure from the low end—sure, photos taken with APS-C sensors look great when they're blown up, but for most web uses they end up being overkill. The fact remains, though, that the right mirrorless camera can produce slick images, and the Sony NEX-F3 does just that. Mario Aguilar reviewed it last June and found a lot to like: More »

Apr 01, 5:34PM

Made of comfy polyurethane foam, Fabio Novembre's new Jolly Roger chair looks like it's capitalizing on the Pirates of the Caribbean trend that unfortunately faded a few years back. However, the film presumably spawned a new generation of pirate wannabes that will find the chair's subtle skull shaping more marvelous than morbid. More »

Researchers Can Now Easily Recognize Spiders Based on Their Web Design Skills

Apr 01, 5:20PM

A lot of biodiversity research relies on being able to recognize and catalog the species in a given ecosystem. Apr 01, 4:53PM

Give basically any piece of tech you carry around the time machine test. Jump ahead 50 years, and show off whatever anachronism of a gadget you brought along to a native. They'd laugh, obviously. But within the confines of our traditional tech specs, you know what they'd probably find most egregious? The battery. More »
